Course description

Course overview

During the course, students learn how resin can be combined with silver using 3 different methods of incorporating cast resin into silver and explore the characteristics of this plastic compared to sheet materials. Students cast resin into readymade moulds and attach silver findings.

The course provides an excellent opportunity for students to make a silver frame pendant in a design of their choice and learn how to cast resin into it so it can be seen from both sides 'plique-a-jour' style. Students also learn how to pour the resin into a concave form, namely, a doomed dish on a ring.

The course incorporates various silver hand working techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering and polishing, as well as the use of resin. Students are guided on how to handle the tools and materials safely and explore how internationally renowned studio jewellers use plastic in experimental ways.

By the end of the 5 weeks, students will have an understanding of 3 techniques to combine resin with silver and have at least 2 completed pieces of jewellery. Students may wish to progress to other jewellery short courses to continue developing their technical skills.
