Ring Making and Stone Setting Short Course
Course description
Course overview
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own ring?
This introductory jewellery making course is taught in the well-equipped jewellery studio at Central Saint Martins. The course covers the basics of jewellery making and guides students through the process of making 3 rings including a ring with a semi-precious stone.
Structured around 3 technical projects that cover essential jewellery making techniques, the course can lead into further jewellery making including setting facetted stones.
During the course, students learn how to use a jeweller's saw to cut metal and cut out an intricate ring blank which will form into a ring shape ready to solder together using a jeweller's torch. After using files and emery to clean the metal for polishing, students learn how to use the polishing wheels and a barrel polisher to finish their ring.
Students then make two rings in silver that stack together, exploring texturing on one ring and learning how to make a stone setting for a semi-precious cabochon stone on the other.
This course is available in two formats: a 5-week evening course or a 3-day course.
