Course overview

User Experience (UX) Design will teach you the essentials of app design and address the importance of User Experience (UX) as an approach to solve people's problems.

Combining theory with practice, this course explores what user experience design is and how it can help you create a more user-friendly website, mobile app or desktop application.

You'll receive feedback, critique and helpful tips on how to identify user needs and behaviours, and iterate your design ideas, design wireframes, build and test prototypes and finally, refine and polish your design. You'll also consider design documentation and the preparation of assets for developers so that you get familiar with the professional UX processes.

This course is available both on campus or online.

Who this course is for

Ideal for design students or graphic design practitioners with a keen interest in using digital solutions to solve problems. As well as other digital practitioners, such as project managers, marketers and copywriters, wanting to adopt design thinking approaches and collaborate with UX designers.

João Marrucho

João Alves Marrucho is a seasoned and accomplished product and service design expert with over 20 years of experience in developing digital platforms and innovative solutions. His extensive background spans Higher Education, Design Practice and Professional Design Consulting Services, where he bridges technology and business to address real user needs and create impactful solutions.

As a designer, João blends creativity with simplicity, crafting elegant and intuitive designs. His design management style focuses on strategic questioning and proven decision-making processes to achieve delivery goals. João has led design strategies and execution for major institutions, including Barclays Wealth, HSBC, and Paragon Bank, at EY - Seren. He holds an MA in Service Design from the Royal College of Art and a Postgraduate Certificate in Design & Communication from the University of the Arts London.

In this course, João is dedicated to empowering students with the knowledge and skills to excel in digital design, from crafting the vision with key stakeholders, to ideation, to prototyping. His collaborative approach and direct communication style ensure an engaging and informative learning experience. João Alves Marrucho's experience will ensure students can unlock their potential to achieve their professional goals in the digital design landscape.

Heidi Smith

Heidi Smith is an Experience Designer with an extensive user research and design practice background. She's been helping businesses to improve their offering to create a better customer digital experience and raise awareness of user experience within companies. She's worked in Publishing, Media, Retails, Non-Profit and Financial industry, currently she's senior UX designer in Aviva Digital Garage.

While working with News UK, she helped develop Times and Sunday Time's website, ran user research on the DreamTeam App; at British Council, she led UX on Venice Biennial website and IELTS's application journey. Heidi was UK Liaison for UXPA (User Experience Professional Association) from 2014 to 2016, built relationships with UX organisations, supported events promotion and sponsorship.

With over 20 years' experience behind her as a designer, Heidi is passionate to share knowledge and help develop the field of user experience design.
