Course description

Course overview

This course is packed with practical advice and fresh interior ideas to help you unleash your creativity and discover new ways to transform a house into a home.

Under the guidance of a professional interior designer, you'll learn simple methods to develop your design concept and effectively translate this into a workable, functional and stylish home design.

You'll also learn about how to use colour, lighting, materials and finishes when re-decorating your home and valuable advice on working with builders and tradespeople.

This course is available both on campus or online.

Who this course is for

This course is ideal for anyone with a passion for interiors and is perfect for new or prospective homeowners who are intent on creating their dream interior or re-decorating an existing room or space in their home. This course will give you the tips and insider knowledge to turn your ideas into reality.

Please bring plans with measurements and images, in relation to an existing renovation project, along to the first class. If you are not able to bring these along, your tutor will provide you with a hypothetical plan, to work from.

Materials

On campus
Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:

  • Pencil and notebook
  • Scale ruler - including scales 1:50 and 1:20/1:25
  • Masking tape
  • Glue stick
  • 0.5mm propelling pencil
  • Eraser
  • 0.1mm fineliner pen
  • Magazines/images for mood board
  • Printed copies of your plans, with measurements. Please ensure they are at scale 1:50. Please choose one room to work with on the course

Online

  • Pencil and notebook
  • Tracing paper A3 pad or loose sheets
  • Scale ruler including scales 1:50 and 1:20 / 1:25
  • Triangular set square 250mm
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • 0.5 propelling pencil
  • Eraser
  • 0.1mm fineliner pen
  • Magazines / images for mood board
  • Printed copies of your plans, with measurements. Please ensure they are at scale 1:5. Please choose one room to work with on the course

Tutor

Debbie Blandford

Debbie Blandford has a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art and 28 years experience working as design consultant to architectural practices and individual clients. She has a passion for working collaboratively and globally, resulting in a truly eclectic career. Projects have included hotels, bars and restaurants, aviation design, exhibitions, and high end residential interiors. 

Clients have included the government of Saudi Arabia. Debbie also designs Furniture offering a truly bespoke interior service as well as developing products with Ross Lovegrove.  

Alongside her professional career she has taught part time across all educational levels in both the public and private sectors as well as delivering specialist courses for companies including British AirwaysThe Foreign Office and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Currently Associate Lecturer at The University of the Arts London & Professor at Syracuse University
