
Graphic Design for 16 to 18 Year Olds Short Course
Course description
A practical and intensive course suitable for enthusiastic and open-minded beginners with a keen interest in graphic design. By engaging with projects, you will develop and improve fundamental graphic design skills. You will broaden your understanding of the graphic design process and extend those principles into practice. Computers will not be used on this course, but there will be a strong focus on creativity and the generation of ideas.
Work produced during this course may form part of a portfolio of designs for application to graphic design courses at foundation or degree levels.
Course Outcomes

Topics covered:
During the week you will be required to show high levels of commitment in the production of extensive amounts of work. In response to set design briefs, through the production of original, exciting and innovative work, you will cover the following areas:
- development of visual research
- concept generation and concept development
- presentation of final design solutions.
Materials
Onsite short course materials
If possible please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process and outcomes of your work. Everything needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any materials or sketchbooks you enjoy using.
Online short course materials:
- A big pile of old magazines or newspapers that are not precious and can be cut up!
- A sheet of A3 paper
- Some coloured A4 paper (if you have it)
- Scissors or a craft knife (with cutting mat)
- Some coloured pens / pencils (you can also use paint or charcoal if you like)
- A glue stick.
To take part in the Online sessions you will need:
- An up-to-date web browser (we recommend Chrome)
- Microphone and headphones (a headset with a microphone function is recommended. The built-in microphone in your device would also be fine).
- Webcam
- Strong Internet connection - we recommend a minimum of 2 Mbps download, and 1 Mbps upload, faster if possible. You can test your network speed here - https://www.speedtest.net
