Course description

Course overview

This practical and intensive course is ideal for enthusiastic, open-minded beginners with a strong interest in graphic design.

Working a range of physical projects, you'll develop fundamental graphic design skills, broaden your understanding of the graphic design process and implement them into practise without the use of computers.

Works produced in this course may contribute to a portfolio for applications to graphic design courses at found or degree levels.

This course is available online and on campus.

Materials

On campus

If possible, please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process of making work, and the outcomes.

Everything else needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any current sketchbooks or materials you enjoy using.

  • Big pile of old magazines or newspapers for cutting up
  • A3 paper
  • Some coloured A4 paper (optional)
  • Scissors or a craft knife (with cutting mat)
  • Coloured pens / pencils (or paint or charcoal)
  • Glue stick

Tutor

Dominika Lipniewska

Dominika Lipniewska is an independent illustrator and designer and a graduate of Central Saint Martins (BA Graphic Design 2010) and Cambridge School of Art (MA Children's Book Illustration 2014). Her day to day practice includes visual identity, editorial illustration, children's book design and illustration, murals, printing and collaboration with various brands. Dominika has experience running creative children's workshops in UK, Europe as well as India and Sri Lanka and has published children's books in many languages. Her illustration and design clients include Tate Publishing, Financial Times, Pepsi, Munch Museum in Oslo, Wallpaper Magazine and Uniqlo.

Shernette Daly

Shernette Daly is a graduate from London College of Printing in 1998 (LCP). She has spent over 15 years practicing as an Art Director and Designer, working on an array of projects including; Music Packaging, Branding and Identity, Advertising, Packaging, Editorial Design, Book Publishing, Illustration and Photography for brands such as Sony Europe, Sony BMG, Sanctuary Records, Universal Music, ITV Publishing, EMAP Media Group, and Channel 4. Currently Shernette is an Associate Lecturer for the University of the Arts London and works across curriculums in a broad capacity, delivering specialist theoretical and practical workshops at London College of Communication, Central St Martins and Chelsea School of Art Undergraduate and Foundation courses, this includes; BA Graphic Media Design, BA Graphic Branding and Identity, BA Graphic Design Communication, Pre-Degree in Art and Design, and Cert HE Preparation for Design, Media and Screen. Alongside practicing as a freelance consultant, she also works in radio broadcast.
