Art Handling and Installation Short Course
Course description
Course overview
In this course, you will prepare several paintings for hanging and, crucially, learn the best ways to handle them and how to avoid damaging frames and canvases. You will be shown how to use a range of hanging systems, be guided through the mathematics of spacing and measuring up, familiarise yourself with filling in forms including loan agreements and condition and facilities reports.
Expect to handle, hang and install using a variety of tools and fixing methods.

This course is suitable for anyone working in museums and galleries, including front-of-house staff who are often asked to help with art handling and installation. Shippers and Handlers who want to learn best practice in the gallery and museum environment. It will also appeal to artists and students wishing to learn the fundamentals required to work as a technician.

Tutor
Scott Miles
Scott Miles is a professional art technician, tutor, and visual artist. He currently works as a consultant and specialist in picture hanging and the installation of art and antiques, working with clients and interior designers in the private and commercial sectors throughout the United Kingdom. He also works as an art technician for a wide variety of commercial, community, institutional and educational galleries and museums throughout London. Scott is a graduate of the Turps Painting Programme in South London, where he also now works to help oversee their gallery and studio program exhibitions.
Scott has previously worked as Gallery Co-ordinator at the Victorian College of the Arts and with the University of Melbourne Art Collection in Australia, where he was trained in best practice methods for collection care and preventative conservation across works on paper, paintings, textiles, objects and antiquities collections. He has over 8 years experience as a tutor in Fine Art in Melbourne Universities. Scott has a studio practice based in East London and has exhibited his own work in Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Adam Holmes-Davies
Adam Holmes-Davies is a practicing visual artist with over 13 years experience as an art technician and has developed knowledge, skills and experience in the care and conservation of museum collections. He currently works for Barbican International Enterprises as a specialist art handler for international touring exhibitions. He also works as a freelance art technician for numerous galleries and museum within the UK. Clients include Somerset House, Saatchi Gallery, Galerie Kamel Mennour, Blue Apron Transport, Aviva insurance, saving and investments and De Beers. Adam graduated from an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2006. Adam has previously worked as Exhibition Specialist at the Natural History Museum, where he was responsible for the technical consultancy on the display and mounting of specimens for exhibition. He was trained in best practice for collection care and preventive conservation for the museum collections. Adam was studio manager for 8 years at Kingsgate Workshops Trust, an artist studio provider based in London. Kingsgate Workshops Trust provides long term, affordable studios for over 50 artists running a education and gallery programme, providing opportunities and support for emerging artists, art professionals and curators.
