Course overview
This course is an introduction for fashion marketing professionals and strategists as well as fashion sustainability activists to the increasingly important trend towards fashion sustainability. The course covers promotion opportunities, the changing consumer, and risks and issues through the value chain.
During the course you will explore critical approaches to fashion marketing and communications from a sustainability perspective and address the question of whether marketing is hindering or helping tackle the sustainability challenges faced by the industry. Tutor
Maria Nishio
Maria Nishio is a Senior Lecturer on BA Fashion and BA Fashion Communication at Central Saint Martins. After graduating from Central Saint Martins BA Fashion, she has worked for international fashion magazines such as Vogue Japan and Wonderland Magazine. Maria is now a permanent member of the Fashion department at Central Saint Martins, leading Diploma in Professional Studies.
Sustainability has been her main focus and interest in fashion, also completing a Masters Degree on Sustainability Leadership from University of Cambridge.
In her research and teaching practice, she looks at opportunities in systemic change and purpose within fashion businesses. How would the fashion industry evolve in response to global challenges that we face today?
Outside of the role of DPS, she regularly runs workshops in her native Japan and often takes part as a panel speaker in talk events /symposiums in UK and abroad on sustainability in fashion, contemporary approach to fashion, education and creativity. (Most recently for Tokyo University of the Arts, Coconogacco (Tokyo), University IUAV of Venice and Fashion Revolution).
Other independent projects include curatorial consultant for International Fashion Showcase organised by the British Council and the British Fashion Council, working closely with the Embassy of Japan in London.
Alice Wilby
Alice Wilby is an art director and stylist who has been working in sustainable fashion since 2009. With her business partner Khandiz Joni, Alice co-founded Novel Beings, the worlds first sustainable style agency; now, A Novel Approach, providing art direction and consultation for sustainable fashion, lifestyle and clean beauty brands. Prior to setting up Novel, Alice was on-line editor at Eco-Age, working on the launch of Gucci's first sustainable accessories collection. She also sits on the Global Advisory Board for Fashion Revolution and has also art directed, styled and produced their photographic campaigns.Book a course
