Course description
Course overview
This course offers an introduction to a variety of hand embroidery styles including ribbon-work, cut-work, shadow-work and stump-work.
You will start with a simple running stitch, laced running stitch, whipped running stitch and back stitch. By the end of the first day, you will have progressed to more complicated techniques such as French knots, which can be used to attach sequins; a whipped spiderweb, a woven spiderweb and a needle-woven ribbon rose.
Other stitches taught on this course include:
- Chain stitch, blanket and buttonhole stitch
- Daisy stitch, stem stitch and couching
- Cross stitch, star stitch and herringbone
- Reverse herringbone for shadow-work
- Overcast stitch for cutwork
- Ribbon stitch for silk ribbon flowers
- Long and short satin stitch and split stitch for thread painting
- Raised satin stitch for stump-work
- Fly stitch, feather and bullion stitch

Tutor
Sunayana Goswami
Sunayana Goswami is a designer-maker who has worked extensively with artisans and craftsmen in rural India including natural dyers, block printers, handloom weavers and embroiderers.
Since graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi, she has worked with several internationally acclaimed Indian designers. She has designed and supplied collections of embroidered clothing for Fabindia and has worked for export houses such as Shades of India, designing fabrics for UK brands including Habitat, Conran Shop, Anthropologie, the V&A Shop and Liberty of London.
In London she has set up her own brand of hand embroidered art and home furnishings; The Timeless Textile Company. She is a member of the Southwark Cathedral Guild of Embroiderers, and worked with them on a goldwork project comissioned by the late Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee Celebration
Rowena Luke-King
Rowena Luke-King has had an extremely diverse career in design and design education. She has worked as a textile designer, a trend forecaster, colour consultant and vintage swatch researcher for leading design studios in both London and New York.
She has produced her own garment collections, accessories, hand printed fabrics, greetings cards and wrapping papers for several stores including the legendary Fiorucci. She has worked as a stylist to the music industry creating bespoke stage clothes and props featured in magazines such as The Face. Tour clothes that she made for Adam Ant were exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Alongside her career in design Rowena has taught at foundation and degree level for several art colleges and universities, and for the United Nations Development Program at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in India. She teaches several short courses at Central Saint Martins and was recently chosen by the V&A Academy to develop and teach the 'pilot' for their online practical courses. https://www.rowenalukeking.com/
