Pattern Cutting and Draping Short Course
Course description
Course overview
This two-week course introduces students to the step-by-step basic pattern cutting, draping, toiling and fitting techniques for womenswear practiced in the fashion industry. The course offers an exciting insight into how a designer designs, develops and creates a garment, using a combination of flat pattern cutting and draping on the stand.
Practical exercises will be demonstrated step-by-step with tutor guidance throughout. Students produce patterns for a selection of garments by using draping and pattern cutting skills to a professional industry standard.
During the course, students have the opportunity to work on a selected design using the skills learnt. In the final week, students may bring their own design that they would like to create using draping or choose something from the tutor's selection. There will be technical support to help with parts of the construction in week 2.
The course aims to stimulate and inspire students to further explore and experiment with creating designs/garments using a combination of the two skills covered, as this is one of the preferred methods used by designers in the industry.
Who this course is for
This course is aimed at aspiring and ambitious amateur designers/pattern cutters and garment makers. It would be an excellent fit for those looking to learn and acquire skills in draping on the stand and flat pattern cutting.
The skills acquired can be a step towards setting up a business or career in pattern cutting, using a combination of the two skills to realise design ideas. Basic sewing skills would be helpful for this course.
