Fashion Design and Styling for 11 to 15 Year Olds Short Course
Course description
This course is ideal if you are considering fashion or styling as a future career, whether you have a passion for fashion and the fashion industry, or simply wish to try something new.
Upon completion, you will have a greater understanding of the processes involved with fashion design and communication, including research and development, 3D experimentation, styling, customising your own garment and developing a project that you can use in your portfolio for further applications. You will explore the process very much in the spirit of Central Saint Martins, where your own personal and explorative approach will be celebrated.
This promises to be an exciting and unique experience for any 11 to 15 year old who is:
- Interested in developing their own creativity
- Building a portfolio for future studies
- Confident in learning from their mistakes
- Keen to work with students of different nationalities
- Willing to work and collaborate with others during projects
- Wishing to develop their skills in communicating ideas.
Central Saint Martins is internationally famous for fashion design. Ex-students include Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson and John Galliano, to name just a few.
Please note: This course is for students aged 11 to 15 years old only.
Please note learners under 16 years of age are not allowed to leave the site during the day. There is a canteen onsite, with a wide range of meals and snacks available. Alternatively you may wish to bring a packed lunch with you. There are microwaves available to re heat food if you wish and if you bring a reusable water bottle with you there are a number of places to refill it.
Course outcomes
By the end of the course students should have:
- A better understanding of the processes involved with fashion design and communication
- Developed a project that may be used in a portfolio
- Had the opportunity to meet students from accross the world
Clear, easy to understand lessons:
- Our tutors will explain things in easy to understand, accessible English. If they need to use any special terminology they will make sure they explain what they mean.
- New methods will be shown to students through live demonstrations, in a way thats crystal clear and easy to understand.

Materials
Please bring with you to the first session:
- At least one piece of old/vintage clothes that they find exciting and don't mind cutting up - at least one piece but the more, the better.
- A selection of exciting fabrics and textiles.
- Anything to embellish a garment surface - old shells, beads, textiles, ribbon, cardboard, scrap materials.
- If possible a camera or camera phone to document your work
- Laptop or iPad for online research if you have one
- A USB stick
