Course overview

This dynamic course helps young art students that are starting their creative journey or honing existing skills build strong portfolios, foster confidence, and dive into creative experimentation. Explore various fine art areas, from painting and drawing to photography and illustration, in a focused studio environment (or online equivalent.

Gain personalised advice on portfolio development and presentation. Develop a critical approach to your work, and take ownership of your creative direction. A research trip to a museum or gallery (on campus) will provide inspiration. Online students will receive virtual gallery tour information and research prompts.

Whether you're exploring future study options or refining your skills, this course offers valuable experience.

Materials

On campus

Everything needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any current sketchbooks or materials you enjoy using.

If possible, please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process of making work, and the outcomes.

Online

Drawing mediums:

  • Pencils (non-colour)
  • Pens and markers (biros, fineliners, etc)
  • Coloured pencils, markers, crayons
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Charcoal

Paper/card:

  • A4 cartridge paper x 50 sheets (or sketchbook)
  • A3 cartridge paper x 10 sheets (or sketchbook)
  • Colour paper
  • A4 Cutting mat or thick card for cutting with a knife

Collage:

  • Masking tape
  • Glue stick
  • Paper scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Magazines / newspapers to cut up (or print outs from the internet)

Painting

  • Set of brushes
  • Acrylic paint in primary colours Red, Blue, Yellow and White
  • Watercolours
  • Inks (if you have them)
  • Paper or canvas for painting
  • Rags, tissues, pots for water etc.

Modelling

  • Paper, card, string, wire, recycling bin contents etc…

Recommended

  • Old clothing/apron for painting
  • Appropriate area for drawing/painting
  • Supervision whilst using craft knife/ internet searching

Tutor

Rochelle Fry

Rochelle Fry is an artist and educator who lives and works in London. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in London where she studied sculpture, she has exhibited her work in the UK and internationally. Rochelle is a long standing member of Five Years, an artist run gallery, she curates exhibitions and coordinates collaborative projects. Rochelle has 10 years extensive experience teaching short courses at CSM including drawing and portfolio preparation. She writes bespoke courses preparing and mentoring students for successful art university applications and also teaches drawing at the Civil Engineering Department, City University, London.

Sam Derounian

A passionate and qualified teacher (UCL Institute of Education), Sam has a range of experience as a teacher and lecturer - in Further education (UAL CCW Foundation Diploma), Higher education (Glasgow School of Art), Short courses (UAL Short Courses and Online Short Courses), and Widening Participation (UCL Slade School of Fine Art). As an artist work has been shown at Tate Modern (GB, 2019), Transmission Gallery (GB, 2011), The Danish Art Workshops (DK, 2023), The Danish Association of Printmakers (Danske Grafikeres Hus) (DK, 2023), CCA Wiznavod (RUS, 2020), The Bloomsbury Theatre (GB, 2016), and more. Sam has won funding for exhibitions and creative development from Creative Scotland (2012), the City of Copenhagen Visual Arts Council (2023), and the Danish Arts Council (2014 & 2015). His work is in the collection of the City of Copenhagen Visual Arts Council (2022). In 2015 Sam curated the exhibition (Un)doing, (Un)making. at Hardwick Gallery, the University of Gloucestershire.

Mari Rose Pritchard

Mari Rose Pritchard is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator. She studied Printmaking at Brighton University and Chelsea School of Art, London, graduating with a First Class Fine Art BA Honours degree and MA respectively. Her hard working ethos, exploration of technique and skill are very much a part of her approach today. While in London, she worked extensively for the stage and for advertising, creating costumes and props for West End Theatres and T.V. Her recent exhibiting journal is full of a series of installations and artworks, bringing her experiences together through rich storytelling, multi visual media and sensual concepts. She is currently collaborating on a multi-faceted project delving into Limestone. She has over 25 years of teaching experience delivering varied courses in Art and Design; teaching a vast array of media to students honing their professional and personal artistic interests. Many of her students achieve and progress onto their desired courses and placements and many exhibit nationally and internationally.

Alice White

Alice White is a professional oil painter and experienced tutor based in London. She has taught at Central Saint Martins for 18 years. Courses that she teaches include Beginners Painting, Art and Design for 16-18 Year Olds, Painting Art History with the Impressionists, and Contemporary Oil Painting.

She is an Accredited Lecturer for The Art Society.
