Course description

Course overview

This short course introduces you to numerous ways contemporary artists use collage and mixed media to generate new ideas for imagery. You will explore and experiment with a multitude of different techniques through a series of practical exercises, to create complete pieces of work or studies that can be used for further development. You will be surprised at your ability to create unexpected images and make unusual juxtapositions, assemblages and visual collisions.

You will learn how to use a broad range of new mixed media techniques and visual elements from a variety of sources. You will gain new insights into the way young contemporary artists use collage, and learn a new appreciation of the radical ways the Surrealists, Cubists, Futurists and others used collage.

You will discover collage as a tool for thinking, realising your ideas, and enriching your work. Collage is experiencing a renaissance and is currently a dominant influence in contemporary art. Discover many new paper materials, imagery creation and mixed media techniques.

Every student will receive a copy of the book 'The Art of Creative Thinking'; by Rod Judkins, a valuable resource that will inspire and guide you in your design journey.
