Principles Practices and Portfolio Development for Sustainable Design for 16 to 18 year olds Short Course

Course description

This intensive 5-day course offers a practical introduction to sustainable design, merging scientific concepts with practical design processes.

Designed to prepare students for foundational studies in sustainable design, the course helps students integrate their scientific knowledge into future design projects. The aim is to equip students with the skills needed to develop and present high-quality projects and support successful college applications.

Through a combination of presentations, discussions, data collection, insight generation, hands-on experiments and design exercises, the course provides an exciting insight into the world of sustainable design.

Adopting a research-focused approach applicable to various sustainable design fields, such as product, fashion and architecture, the course covers fabrication techniques, portfolio development and design conceptualisation.

Students explore practical applications, develop design skills, and gain insights into how sustainability integrates with design, preparing them for future studies or careers in this rapidly growing field.

Please note: this course includes a field trip to Hampstead Heath.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course students should:

  • Be able to develop and present their own design project for inclusion in their portfolio
  • Understand core sustainable design principles and how to apply them in practice
  • Be able to apply scientific concepts to enhance design processes and outcomes
  • Have experience with data collection, analysis and generating insights for design projects
  • Be able to develop design concepts and prototypes using accessible resources
  • Have the skills needed to create and curate a portfolio showcasing sustainable design projects for college applications
