Course description
To complete Graded Awards in Drawing: Colour, you will create a drawing that effectively records a subject from observation. Choose one of the given subjects to make a drawing on paper, showing how you use colour to create meaning.
Subject specialists at UAL Short Courses will mark your work, then you will be issued a digital certificate with your grade plus a digital badge to share online.
Like traditional awards, Graded Awards give recognition for your drawing ability in the form of a grade. They allow you flexibility and freedom to complete the exam at your own pace in an environment you are comfortable with. The awards are highly valued by creative employers and are endorsed by the UK VFX industry.
Who should take this Graded Award?
- We suggest you take Graded Awards in Drawing: Colour if, you have already completed Grades 1-4 to work towards the complete set of Graded Awards. You can also jump in at this grade if you are an advanced learner wanting to demonstrate your ability using colour to convey meaning in your drawings, and your knowledge of colour theory.

- To get the full set of Graded Awards in Drawing, complete with digital badges and certificate, you’ll need to complete grades 1-6 of the awards. Or for advanced learners, you’ll need to complete grades 4-6

Details
Graded Awards are a package of six awards that recognise different skills in drawing. They progress from one to six in level of difficulty. You can either start at the beginning for a complete assessment or jump in at a higher level if you want to receive recognition of a particular skill.
Grade 1 - Copying
To complete the Copying award, you will need to create and submit a drawing copied from one of the images provided in the paper. You will be assessed on observation, accuracy, and materials and techniques.
Grade 2 - Line
To complete the Line award, you will need to make and submit a line drawing that accurately depicts a given subject. Assessment will be on; accuracy and observation; use of materials and techniques; and your ability to create an interesting and visually complex image.
Grade 3 - Tone
To complete the Tone award, you will need to create and submit a tonal drawing that accurately depicts a given subject and effectively records light and shadow.
Grade 4 - Composition
To complete the Composition award, you will need to create and submit a series of drawings which focus on composition. To make your composition you will choose at least 3 items from the provided list.
Grade 5 - Colour
To complete the Colour award, you will create a drawing that effectively records a subject from observation. Choose one of the given subjects to make a drawing on paper, showing how you use colour to create meaning.
Grade 6 - Expression and meaning
To complete the Expression and Meaning award, you will need to create a drawing that effectively interprets a given theme. You must support your drawing with a portfolio of evidence that includes; an inspiration sheet, a preparatory sheet, and a written statement.
Assessment
- Each paper includes examples of pass, merit and distinction criteria
- Each paper includes an assessment grid outlining the learning objectives to help give you your best chance of success

Materials needed will be some or all the following.
- Pencil
- Paper (A3/A4)

- Oil pastels
