This contemporary drawing and painting course is for passionate painters and artists who want to dedicate time to improving their skills and techniques. It will inspire you to build on existing knowledge and techniques so you can create with confidence and take your art to the next level.
Who this course is for
This short course is ideal if you want to achieve real progress in your paintings and invest in yourself to learn new techniques and develop your own individual art style. It is also ideal if you are looking to create new compositions and to help find your response to contemporary life. This course is taught by weekly online sessions with dedicated projects each week.

Topics covered
- How do you choose subjects with the most potential for you to express your ideas?
- We will look at understanding the relationship between the imagination and visual appearance and how it is used in an artwork
- Colour, light, space and form are the essential pillars of the language used in painting and drawing. You will learn to control these elements to help you further develop your own work
- You will be working with acrylic, oil and pencils as well as a variety of other mediums. You will also learn many other skills such as painting in one sitting, how to work from photographs, finding abstract art, and making effective compositions
- Your work will be critiqued in a constructive and supportive way, by a professional artist as well as others in your group. Feedback from other students as well as your tutor will help your work progress and blossom by the end of the course.

- Putty rubber
- Willow Charcoal
- Fixative
- Gesso Primer
- Assorted paintbrushes (at least two large)
- Drawing board
- Good assortment of coloured oils and acrylics
- Turpentine

Tommy Ramsay
Tommy Ramsay is an artist based in London. His practice includes painting, screen printing, casting and collage. He has studied at UAL Chelsea and the Royal College of Art. Sarah Sparkes
Sarah Sparkes is an artist and independent curator whose practice explores the immaterial and how this may be visualised. Since 2008 she has run the curatorial research project GHost. She has organised numerous collaborative and solo projects, working with both U.K. and international artists and realising ambitious events and exhibitions in both public and private spaces - including the London Art Fair and Folkestone Triennial. She holds an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts and between 2009 - 2011 was a Research Fellow at the University of London. As well as leading and curating a number of visual arts projects, she frequently exhibits her own work which encompasses installation, painting, performance and film. She was the 2015 the winner of the MERU Art*Science Award, recently had a solo exhibition with New Art Projects. A qualified HE Lecturer, she has taught within both academic and non-academic environments and is currently lecturing in Fine Art and Independent Curating at a number of London institutions including Tate Modern and University of the Arts. She lectures and has published widely on her own practice and curatorial projects.
