Course description
Course overview
Join this short course and be introduced to the wide-ranging discipline of illustration and an improved understanding of the possibilities of image-making. From book illustration and publishing to animation and motion graphics.
Through a series of projects, lectures and discussions, you'll be asked to respond to a range of tasks that introduce the key skills necessary to set out in the pursuit of becoming an illustrator.
You'll learn how to respond creatively to a brief and generate imaginative ideas through the process of visual problem solving. The relationship between image and text will be explored and you will begin to identify the key visual characteristics relative to your particular interests in the context of a personal style and language.
This course is available both on campus or online.

- A selection of graphite and coloured pencils
- Gouache paint primary colour set
- Black Indian ink
- A set of soft brushes
- A pencil sharpener
- A ruler (minimum 30cm)
- One black fineliner and marker pen
- A selection of pens/mark making materials (reflective of your preferred working methods)
- Scissors/craft knife

- A USB memory stick

Tutor
Alessandra Genualdo
Alessandra Genualdo is an Italian born, London based illustrator.
She graduated from the MA Illustration course at Camberwell College of Arts, and has been freelancing ever since, addressing her work particularly to the editorial and the publishing industry.
She has been leading art and illustration workshops alongside her practice, working for clients such as the V&A and the Museum of London.
Her work combines gouache, hand painted patterns, textures and solid blocks of colour, capturing the sense of awkwardness and individuality in everyday life.

Val Mcbride
Valerie McBride is a book illustrator who has worked for several publishers including Oxford University Press, Heinemann and BBC Books. Her work explores different ways of illustrating her own stories and imagined worlds through panoramic sequences, animation, print and three-dimensional interpretation.
Valerie is a very experienced tutor who has been teaching at the University of Arts, London for the past 20 years. She is an associate lecturer at Camberwell College of Arts where she teaches illustration at Foundation level and at postgraduate level on the Graduate Diploma course.
She has also contributed regularly to gallery education programmes, providing master classes relating to temporary exhibitions and was a tutor for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Society.
