Course description
Course overview
Join Street Photography and learn how to recognise the potential to use available light and location to produce meaningful photographs. Through a series of lectures and practical exercise you will lean how to utilise any environment to craft a story, using single images as well as sequenced photo-essays.
You will learn to make photographs of candid, spontaneous moments, and overcome the hurdle of making images with strangers. You will learn about paying attention to behaviour, and how to utilise that to anticipate your frame.
You will learn about ambiguity, making photographs that ask the viewer a question, as well as intention, making photographs that give your viewer an answer.You will learn how to personalise your work, reaching for your own perspective and experiences in order to tailor your photography to your own life rather than just echoing the work of others.
By the end of the course you will understand what it means to be a considerate and self-conscious photographer - approaching street scenes effiectively, and have the skills to deliver the best results based on your own perspective. You will have a small body of work by the end of the course, but more importantly a strong direction to develop that into a portfolio and expand your style constantly and organically.
Who this course is for
This course is ideal for you if you are interested in photography/street photography but feel that you lack direction or a personal style and would like to take the next steps towards finding your voice.
It is for anyone who has a camera, knows how to use it, but doesn't know why to use it. You should know how to use a DSLR/mirrorless camera on manual settings. Film cameras are allowed, but must also use digital in order to have work ready to dicsuss on the final day.

Materials
- Digital camera with charged batteries and spares!
- (if no digital camera is available please bring a suitable phone with camera)
- Clear SD card and spares
- Camera Lens preferably 35/50mm but not essential - whatever is available to you is fine
- Suitable and weather appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear for any outdoor work
- Water bottle!
Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students
Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) in order to access the Adobe suite at the college; instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.
Please note:
- Creating an Adobe account is free
- The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
- The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
- You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class
- If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account
To create an account students will need to:
- Go to Adobe Sign in page
- Select 'Create an account'
- Enter your details and select 'Create account'

Simon is a documentary photographer, whose work explores communities and cultural expression, as well as metaphysics and abstract relationships between people and our environment.
Simon has worked on current event photojournalism, fashion, and commercial reportage; covering movie/media productions, fashion BTS, and corporate events.
