Course overview
Led by fashion photographer Darren Black, this 5-day digital photography short course is perfect for aspiring photographers looking to unlock the art of storytelling through the lens.
During the course, students learn how to capture the beauty, emotion and energy of everyday life on the streets while developing their technical and creative skills. The aim is to transform the way you see the world – one snapshot at a time!
Students will benefit from professional instruction from an experienced fashion photographer and participate in guided city walks to capture real-world moments. There will be a mini exhibition on the final day to celebrate progress.
Who this course is for
This hands-on course is for students aged 16 to 18 with an interest in fashion street photography. The course is perfect for beginners and intermediate photographers eager to explore the world of street photography.
No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity, creativity and a camera (or smartphone).

Topics covered
- Day 1: The basics of street photography - understand the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and storytelling, and get comfortable with your camera settings. Lecture on the icons of street photography and its colourful history.
- Day 2: Finding your style - explore different approaches to street photography, from candid shots to dramatic portraits, and discover your unique photographic voice. Lecture on: What is street style?
- Day 3: Shooting in the field - embark on guided photo walks through dynamic urban environments, putting your skills into practice while receiving real-time feedback. A walkabout in iconic locations in Central London.
- Day 4: Studio shoot in University - a studio shoot where we can control the lighting and the students get to style a fashion model.
- Day 5: Editing and post-processing: learn how to enhance your images using photo-editing software to bring out the best in your work. Exhibition day: select and prepare your favourite shots for a mini gallery display and celebrate your progress with fellow participants.

John W Noonan
John William has been working at the forefront of fashion media for over twenty years. An industry professional, his work spans fashion writing, styling, creative direction, trend forecasting, photography and marketing. He launched London College of Fashion's print magazine 'Pigeons and Peacocks' in 2008 and continued to work as the Editor in Chief for the next five years. John William has also worked as an editor at Beauty Papers Magazine. Editorial experience includes: i-D, Vice, The Sunday Times.
Style, Paper, Nylon, Vogue and many more creative and independent magazines. For the past decade, John has been working as an Associate Lecturer at the London College of Fashion across a number of BA courses, as well as teaching a range of fashion media short courses.
