Course overview
This course introduces you to a wide range of textile techniques, giving you insight into how textiles are used across creative fields, from fine art, fashion and jewellery to communication, architecture and theatre design.
You'll be encouraged to take risks, experiment, and explore new ways of working, helping you develop a fresh and creative approach to making. Perfect for students studying GCSEs or A levels, this course will enhance your skills, broaden your thinking, and support your ongoing art and design studies.

Materials
- A4 sketchbook
- Drawing materials (including coloured felt pens, pastels or pencils, paints and a variety of paint brushes)
- Black fine liner pen
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Old sponges to draw with
- Knitting needles - size 6mm and 4mm
- Crochet hook - size 6mm and 4mm
- Coloured yarns - double knit, chunky and Aaron (please buy yarns that are the correct thickness for 6mm and 4mm)
- A ball of string
- Coloured embroidery threads and sewing needle to fit threads
- A selection of newspapers, cardboard boxes and other found materials from home (e.g. net fruit bags, wire coat hangers, old bottle tops, egg cartons etc.)
- Any scrap fabrics or old garments for cutting up
Tutor
Berni Yates
Berni Yates has over 30 years experience in the Fashion and Textiles sector – she has worked for Central Saint Martins for the past 20 years – her specialist area is Fashion Knitwear.
Berni has many years of experience supporting young people with access and progression onto Art Foundation and Fashion, Textiles and Jewellery Degree courses at CSM and other HEIs.
She has been instrumental in setting up community Arts projects PAN UK, to support Art Education.
Berni is currently lead on Knowledge Exchange for the Fashion programmes at CSM, working across the sector talking to industry experts and weaving new knowledge into the curriculum.
She has a wealth of Insights into the Fashion and Textiles industry and continues to consult and design her own label of bespoke knit garments. She is also joint course director for Textiles Portfolio short course at CSM.
Berni has a broad knowledge of learning and teaching at CSM and UAL more broadly, so is well placed to help with portfolio building.
