Join us for the closing of Ubuntu, an exhibition and programme celebrating connection, community and collective creativity.

Ubuntu – I am because we areis a multi-stranded exhibition and workshop programme conceived by Jason Forrest, Sharon Bertram, and Ian Thompson.

The philosophy of ubuntu, originating from the Bantu and Xhosa traditions of southern Africa, and later popularised by Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, embodies the idea that our humanity is deeply interconnected. The phrase ‘I am because we are’ expresses values of community, collectivism, and shared responsibility, fostering an awareness of how our lives are shaped by those around us.

Over the past months, Ubuntu – I am because we are has brought artists, students, and local communities into conversation through exhibitions, workshops, and shared reflection. The project has explored how we create meaning together and recognise our interdependence.

This closing event is a space to celebrate the contributions of everyone who has taken part — artists, participants, and visitors alike — and to consider how the spirit of ubuntu continues beyond the gallery.

Tickets are free and all are welcome. Refreshments provided.
