Thinking Teaching is a two-day introduction to teaching and learning in Higher Education.

The course has been designed for UAL staff who are new to teaching or whose roles include an aspect of teaching or supporting learning. It will be especially useful for new Associate Lecturers, PhD students who teach, Technicians, Library Services and Academic Support staff.

Thinking Teaching is an interactive blend of theoretical input and practical activities. You will explore the current UK Higher Education context through the lens of climate, racial and social justice principles. You will be introduced to foundational pedagogic theories relevant to art and design Higher Education and invited to consider the relationship between research and educational practice. You will also undertake and critically evaluate a short 'microteaching' activity with your peers.

Through undertaking Thinking and Teaching, you will be:

  • better orientated to educational practice in Higher Education, especially at UAL
  • able to situate your own teaching and supporting learning in the context of foundational pedagogic theory
  • able to consider learners, barriers to learning and the place social justice has in learning and teaching
  • more confident in your educational practice, with a greater sense of agency
  • have considered ways to link research to your educational practice
  • able to plan your next steps in terms of educational activity and professional development

This course is open to UAL staff and enrolled UAL PhD students only.
