Layout and formatting
Make formatting consistent throughout your document:
- Allow enough white space around the page and between lines of type.
- Provide a contents list to make your document more navigable.
- Give each new section a clear heading to help the reader find relevant content.
- Use bullet point lists to break up text and keep things flowing.
Resolution
The standard resolution for printed images is 300 DPI (dots per inch) at final size.
Colour
Colour mode should be set in CMYK, not RGB, for printing.
Typography
Use our primary typeface, Helvetica Neue, in a minimum font size of 11 for all printed materials.
Imagery
If you’re using images of student work:
- Do not crop or alter the images.
- Avoid design elements or colour washes that detract from the images.
- Properly credit all images.
When you’re using any images or artwork in print, check that you have the right to use the image. Any image on the UAL Image Library will be marked with copyright information, including any usage restrictions.
File format
Submit a PDF file to your print vendor, rather than an InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop working file. PDF files encapsulate layouts and most fonts, so your print designs can’t be changed.
Disclaimers
Information in printed publications is liable to change and may become outdated:
- Include a disclaimer: “All information is correct at the time of publication.”
- If including links to external websites in your publication, also include the disclaimer: “UAL is not responsible for the content on any external websites.”
