Chelsea alumnus Thomas J Price unveils Windrush commission

Former Chelsea student Thomas J Price celebrated the unveiling of his commission dedicated to Hackney's Windrush community on National Windrush Day, 22 June. Thomas’s artwork, entitled ‘Warm Shores’, is a pair of striking 9-foot-tall bronze figures based on over 30 digital 3D images of local residents who have a personal connection to Windrush.

Thomas J Price was born in South London and studied Fine Art Sculpture at Chelsea College of Arts between 2001 and 2004. He then went on to complete his MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. Price's art practice spans sculpture, photography, film and animation.
The unveiling of Price’s sculptures was accompanied by an evening of music and dance. The celebration marked the culmination of Hackney Council’s Hackney Windrush Artwork Commission, established in partnership with Create London, and with support from Art Fund and Freelands Foundation.

National Windrush Day has been observed in the UK since 2018, when it marked the 70th anniversary of the arrival of African-Caribbean immigrants to Britain. The day honours the British Caribbean community and their contributions to life in Britain. In 2018, Hackney was the first UK council to pass a comprehensive motion regarding the Windrush generation, lobbying for justice for those affected by the Windrush scandal.
