UAL Student Reps

Course Reps, School Reps and Sabbatical Officers work with UAL and Arts SU to represent student voice and improve students’ university experience.

Course Reps

Course Reps are student volunteers who work with students, UAL and Arts SU staff to develop change to positively impact students' academic experience. Using their feedback, Course Reps represent the views of students on their course.

At the start of the academic year, academic staff share information with students about the Course Rep role and invite them to sign up online. This is a voluntary (unpaid) role, with an expected commitment of 1-2 hours per week.

Feedback on academic experience can include:

· Teaching and Learning

· Assessments and Feedback

· Organisation e.g. timetable, communication of key information

· Learning Resources e.g. studio spaces, Moodle

Course Reps raise this feedback with UAL staff and Arts SU. They attend key meetings termly including Student and Dean Forums and Course Committees, to share this feedback and discuss action being taken to improve student experience.

All Course Reps are provided with in-person and/or online training and are supported by Arts SU, academic staff and wider University colleagues throughout their time in the role.

Get in touch with the Education Quality Team at Arts SU for more information by sending an email to coursereps@su.arts.ac.uk.

School Reps

School Reps are elected student representatives who gather academic feedback from students across all courses within their school and raise this feedback with UAL and Arts SU staff.

There are 2 School Reps per School, meaning a total of 6 School Reps in each College. This is a voluntary role (unpaid).

School Reps work alongside Deans, Course Reps and Arts SU to ensure that student voice is represented at School-level. They attend key meetings termly, including the Board of Studies, where they raise relevant student feedback on behalf of students.

Students who want to become a School Rep put themselves forward for this role during the standing period for the Arts SU Autumn elections. Elections take place in January-February and October-November.

Sabbatical Officers

Sabbatical Officers are full-time, paid and elected student representatives who work with Arts SU to represent all students across our Colleges and communities. They campaign on issues that matter to students, work with UAL staff to undertake research, disseminate knowledge to students and staff, and help set the strategic direction of Arts SU.

There are 6 full-time Sabbatical Officer roles. They are:

  • CCW and CCI Officer
  • CSM Officer
  • LCF Officer
  • LCC Officer
  • Student Communities Officer
  • Union Affairs Officer

Training

Undertaking training is a mandatory part of becoming a Course Rep or School Rep.

Course Reps and School Reps are provided with in-person training that takes place on campus, with an online option available for those unable to attend in-person. In addition to the in-person/live online training, Reps complete online training modules (which include quizzes and videos). Course and School Reps must complete all training before carrying out the role. Training resources and materials are developed by the Education Quality Team at Arts SU.

More information about training sessions, including details about relevant dates/times, locations and format is provided to relevant staff and students by Arts SU in the Autumn term.
