So you'd like to be a stylist? This London College of Fashion Study Abroad Summer School will provide you with an in depth and invaluable insight into what it takes.

Course introduction

On this dynamic and fast paced three-week Fashion Styling course you will gain first-hand practical knowledge and industry insight. You will work with various research methods and techniques, as well in collaboration, experiencing the diverse roles and responsibilities that stylists have within creative teams.

You will have opportunity to research fashion editorial, catwalk, commerce, advertising, celebrity / influencer, and the entertainment industry. Practical workshops, lectures and conversations will hone your skills and develop your own unique creative approaches to styling, these include fashion image analysis, effective use of mood boards, styling to suit a variety of genres, fashion editing, catwalk trends, and collections.

You will also explore the roles of a creative team, learn about project management, the importance of art direction, and trend analysis. You will learn how to investigate, and develop colour awareness, and discuss identities, diverse body shapes, and silhouette.

Working in allocated teams with a group theme, you will develop a rough shoot, and build a series of styled images that explore technical skill, learning how to navigate a fashion shoot. You will work towards a professional level editorial styling (editorial test shoot) and take away original and creative images to boost your portfolio.

Entry requirements

English requirements

You should be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and make presentations. As a guideline we would expect you to have an English language level equivalent to IELTS score of 6.0 (list of language equivalencies). A certificate is not required.

Academic requirements

This course is open to all levels and is suitable for students over 18 wanting undergraduate-level study.

Course details

This course will provide you with an in depth insight into the life of a stylist. You will gain a thorough understanding of the key roles and responsibilities of a stylist, hair and make up artist, designer, photographer, and art director. You will look at what an assistant would do, and how you might eventually become established in the fashion image creation arena. We will investigate many aspects, from multi channel media to television and film, to the current 'craze' of celebrity styling.

As well as learning about trend analysis, the importance of networking and relationships with PRs, and creating a targeted portfolio; you will develop a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of styling on a photo shoot/film.

Teaching and independent study time hours:

Our Summer Study Abroad courses offers 20 taught hours (per week) built into the schedule, 60 taught hours in total. As a frame of reference, Study Abroad recommends between 20-30 hours in total for additional independent / self-directed study time (average 7-10 hours per week) to further develop ideas and realise project ambitions.

Each of our 3-week Summer Study Abroad courses are developed at undergraduate level 4, although they are still open to all learners. Courses may suit a creative in the early stages of their career, or individuals looking to develop new skills and processes, (delivered in taster format), as well as those wishing to build on community and networking opportunities.

  • Fashion hair and makeup
  • Composition, colour & mood

Presentation skills:

  • Creating a visual reference board
  • Enhancing your work to achieve perfection

Credits

  • This course is the equivalent to 4 US style credits.
  • If you’re planning to claim credit towards your degree, be sure to check with your home institution before you apply.

Course Tutors

Loukia Minetou

Loukia Minetou is a costume designer for theatre and films with over 20 years of industry experience. She has been collaborating with numerous venues in London and Athens including the Royal Court Theatre, the Young Vic, the National Theatre Southbank, the Barbican, the National Theatre of Greece, Herodeion Ancient Theatre, and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. She has also worked as a stylist for commercials, ad campaigns and music videos. Loukia is a lecturer at the LCF, BA (Hons) Fashion Styling and Production and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Rebekah Roy

Rebekah Roy's work is driven by her love for creating compelling visual narratives for brands, designers, and artists alike. Her work has spanned continents, from Singapore to Nigeria. She has styled 75+ catwalk shows, including those for London Fashion Week, Rolls Royce, Ascot and Harrods. Rebekah's global vision and insightful expertise have made her a trusted name among leading fashion brands like HLA Group and Kate Spade. Collaborations with iconic musicians include Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Enya, Kate Nash, Max Rae. A strong advocate for sustainability, Rebekah leads by example. In 2020, she took the helm of Bare Fashion London, pioneering the UK’s first vegan fashion show and nurturing an online store dedicated to vegan fashion innovations.

For this course you will need:

  • Sketchbook / Journal and pencils
  • Camera Phone / Digital Camera with memory card
  • Laptop with Adobe Suite Software installed, cable to download photos digitally

Items can be purchased from the college shop or local art store.

Summer Study Abroad Award

We offer a Summer Study Abroad Award for all of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses.

To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, hold an offer to join one of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses, and be enrolled on an undergraduate degree programme outside the UK.

  • The award covers the tuition-fee only and depends on you successfully enrolling for the course. Our cancellation policy still applies.
  • Award winners will be asked to take part in promotional activities to promote Summer Study Abroad, including social media posts and takeovers, and blog writing.
