This London College of Fashion Study Abroad Summer School is aimed at students wanting to know more about fashion design.

Course introduction

This 8-week fashion design study abroad summer school programme will help you further develop your design and making skills, as well as offering insights into professional roles that go into creating and sustaining a fashion career; whether as a designer / maker, stylist, content creator (or commissioner), communicator, collaborator, researcher, textile specialist or product developer, you will critically engage across a wide range of interests, and specialist areas to develop practical, and transferrable skills. You will benefit from a diverse range of expert tutors and support staff, which makes us one of the foremost global fashion education establishments. We offer a unique and dynamic learning environment, within which you will develop and enhance your individual potential and design ethos. Our team of specialist tutors, combine their teaching with professional consultancy and freelance industry work, guaranteeing you are informed of current industry practice, to develop and embed into your own projects and outcomes.

Entry requirements

You should be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and make presentations. As a guideline we would expect you to have an English language level equivalent to IELTS score of 6.0.

Academic requirements

Students applying for this course are expected to have a minimum GPA of 2.8 or equivalent.

Course details

This 8-week fashion design study abroad summer school programme is taught across various formats from specialist workshops, lectures, group work, discussions, and 1-1’s. This programmes is underpinned by Contemporary Culture and Fashion Studies, which will introduce you to a variety of key London locations, cultural and iconic sites, at the heart of the British Fashion community. You will find inspiration from visits, researching exhibitions, printed matter and digital spaces. Throughout each dynamic and fast paced unit, you will immerse yourself in all things fashion and applied design to experience a full breadth of 2D and 3D possibilities to research and experiment with.

You will immerse yourself in visual communication to develop critical research and thinking skills in relation to fashion image(s) and the importance of visual literacy. At times, you may find yourself negotiating roles by collaborating in teams, alongside project managing, analysing trends, developing strategies, research buying cycles, trend forecasting in relation to product development, and profitability. You will interpret your creative ideas, finding design solutions at the same time as being aware of commercial restraints, alongside the luxury market to develop beautiful bespoke design work and hand craft. As climate awareness is very important at UAL, you are encouraged to be as experimental as possible and consider processes of reuse, upcycling, and recycling materials.

During this course you will be taking the following units for a total of 12 credits:

  • Fashion Business and Product Development (2 Credits)
  • Contemporary Culture and Fashion Studies (2 Credits)
  • Fashioning Textile Fabrics: Collage and Stitch (2 credits)
  • 3D Design and Experimentation (3 Credits)
  • Styling (2 Credits)
  • Visuals for Fashion (1 Credit)

How to apply

When you apply you will need to include a Personal Statement, recent transcript, academic letter of reference and a portfolio.

Personal statement:

Explain why you have chosen to Study Abroad at UAL, what you plan to get out of your Study Abroad experience and how this fits into your personal goals. Your Personal Statement should be short, around 300-500 words.

Portfolio:

For your portfolio, submit a selection of 5 images. The work you include should show your creative thinking and personal research.
