Course introduction

Central Saint Martins' fashion alumni like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney have changed the way that the world looks at fashion. In this 3 week course you will use research as the key to the design process, using London's streets, museums and people as the starting point. You will then go on to develop your ideas into designs and explore a range of different illustration techniques to present them to finished portfolio standard.

Entry requirements

English requirements

You should be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and make presentations. As a guideline we would expect you to have an English language level equivalent to IELTS score of 6.0.

Academic requirements

Students applying for this course are expected to be independent and highly motivated, preferably having completed one year at university (undergraduate-level study).

Course details

You will be expected to push your ideas to expand and explore what is possible through the design process. During the class you will also visit specialist fabric shops and the costume collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. You will be assessed on research in a sketchbook, sketches and rough design ideas, with designs developed from these ideas presented as illustrations to portfolio standard.

The 3 week course culminates in a fashion show and exhibition held at Central Saint Martins.

  • This course is the equivalent to 4 US style credits.

Alexis Panayiotou

Alexis is a fashion illustrator and tutor on the BA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins.

Anna-Nicole Ziesche

Anna-Nicole  graduated in BA and MA Fashion from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, UAL. Her shift towards film and performance began in the last year of her MA Fashion. Her film ‘Infinite Repetition’ (2000) was a radical departure for Anna-Nicole Ziesche and marked a turning point in fashion communication practice because it utilized the medium of film to unveil the continuously evolving designs and shapes of garments.

Anna-Nicole Ziesche works as a Visual Artist and Pathway Leader on the BA (hons) Fashion Design Womenswear at Central Saint Martins, UAL (since 2015). She was a Research Fellow in Design for Performance at London College of Fashion, UAL (2009-2015).

Exhibitions include:

RMIT Design Hub, Melbourne, Australia (2015), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France (2013+2015); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rottterdam, The Netherlands (2009); Museum of the Moving Image, New York, USA (2007), V&A Fashion in Motion, London, UK (2001).

Joshua Beaty

Joshua Beaty is an artist, designer and educator living and working in London. He graduated from the BA and MA Fashion Programmes at Central Saint Martins as a recipient of the Samsung Award, the Sarabande Foundation Scholarship and the Louise Wilson Fund Award. He has worked with Julie Verhoeven, Charles Jeffrey, Fantastic Toiles, Phoebe English, Dover Street Market, Love Magazine, Joyce Hong Kong, David Lynch’s Silencio, La Musee des Beaux-Arts d’Orleans, amongst others. As an artist, he has exhibited internationally. From 2019-2021 he was artist-in-residence at Sarabande; the Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation.
Joshua joined the BA Fashion academic team in 2019 and teaches across all design pathways.

Simon Gray

Simon Gray is a visual artist based in London. After studying Fashion Print at CSM he went on to design prints for Akeem Smith, Martine Rose and Nasir Mazhar. In recent years, Simon has contributed to Fantastic Toiles, a collectively run retail platform by independent designers and artists.
Simon teaches drawing on BA Fashion Jewellery at LCF alongside illustration work and set design. Known for his playful approach to drawing classes, Simon combines costume, set and music, and advocates a bold and expressive style in illustration.

The tutors on this course are subject to change depending on the course dates.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session: 

Students will be provided with a Central Saint Martins sketchbook and layout pad. You will need to supply all other art materials including:

  • Sketching pencils
  • Black pen
  • Colouring pencils
  • Digital camera (and/or camera phone)

Other art materials are optional and can be purchased at a discounted price from the college shop:

  • Coloured inks
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pastels
  • Gouache
  • Glue
  • Watercolours
  • Coloured paper
  • Scissors

Summer Study Abroad Award

We offer a Summer Study Abroad Award for all of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses.

To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, hold an offer to join one of our 3 week Summer Study Abroad courses, and be enrolled on an undergraduate degree programme outside the UK.

  • The award covers the tuition-fee only and depends on you successfully enrolling for the course. Our cancellation policy still applies.
  • Award winners will be asked to take part in promotional activities to promote Summer Study Abroad, including social media posts and takeovers, and blog writing.
