Digital Innovation Season:
Planetary Sensing
A Planetary Philosophy
Digital Innovation Season at Central Saint Martins explores and celebrates creativity in the digital space, through an inspiring programme of public talks and student workshops throughout February.
The 2024 season theme is ‘Planetary Sensing’. This theme brings a ‘planetary’ perspective to the climate crisis, social impact, and cutting edge technologies. The planet Earth “senses,” understands and communicates through arrays of satellites, sensors, swarms and servers that shape geographies, climate, science, and societies.
Planetary Sensing investigates how technologies are impacting our environment, and also how technologies can help with the ecological crisis. Rather than imagining a schism between the local and the global, a planetary perspective considers how the material, social, technical and biogeochemical conditions of the planet converge, shaping information, interfaces, and intelligences.
Planetary Sensing combines speculative design and social infrastructure. The season series explores how digital technologies can be applied and leveraged towards propositions for a resilient planet. These approaches combine technical skills and social techniques, exploring the narratives, governance and operating modalities and social experiments in which digital and physical environments are entwined.
Throughout the season, meet some of the UK-based artists and designers who are working on these topics across geographies, technologies, and intelligence. They are inspired by planetary systems and surveillance, outer space and civic space, and they are developing philosophies, practices, and perspectives that transport us across space and time.
Sign up to learn skills that enrich your critical perspectives of the future!
Digital Innovation Season is open to all CSM students at all levels, but spaces are limited. Please sign up and if your plans change, open space for other students to participate.
