Hi! I'm Bekka. I’m a make-up artist and hairstylist from the North West and based in between Liverpool and Manchester.
Not as much as I hoped with the pandemic but been busy rebuilding my network up north since graduating and making a name for myself here. I have met some incredible creatives and worked with brands The Modern Style & Airbrushed Apparel recently.
I was studying on a level 3 hair and media make-up course and was in awe of the idea of pursuing a career in fashion. I wanted to explore London and create looks for photoshoots. LCF was the perfect place for that.
Definitely not. In school, I never knew what I wanted to do. It seemed like so many people had their lives figured out and I was just taking each day as it came.
I did do a games design course before make-up and loved it. I had bad mental health at the time and needed a fresh start - make-up was just that. Since then, make-up has been my life pretty much.
It’s been hard with the pandemic I won’t lie. People already in the fashion industry will know and for anyone like me breaking into it as well. Sometimes it’s felt like the worst time to break into it but the key is to not let it get you down and just keep knocking on doors till someone lets you in.
It’s been a crazy rollercoaster for sure but I am so happy with how it’s going and we can now finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I want to keep growing my presence in the northern fashion industry and potentially explore the music industry. Recently, I’ve had the desire to work on music videos so I am hoping I can get that started this year. I want to get the chance to work for some of my top fashion brands like Motel Rocks and Nasty Gal - maybe even working on a campaign of theirs which would be a dream.
I loved cultural-historical studies the most. I learnt so much from it which doesn’t just benefit me in my profession but as a person. Speaking and delving into important topics like whiteness, race, nationalism etc was eye-opening for everyone in my class.
I would have to say our final project would be my favourite. Even though we never got to finish it due to the pandemic, from the start I had this idea with coloured lashes that were becoming popular at the start of 2020 and created a shoot with an amazing team that then got published in Lucy’s Magazine. I enjoyed having free-reign in the final project to try out ideas.
Melissa Moore the course leader would always say it’s so important to know hair as well as makeup. I knew make-up and always found hair a challenge in the past. Now being in the industry and doing hair too, I now fully know why she kept telling us to take both seriously. You are more employable with both and it’s true!
Just enjoy it. Make friends, be creative and have fun. Make the most of the opportunities at the University and network as much as you can. The staff at UAL are the best around and care about you and your work so listen to them and if you’re struggling with anything they are there to help.
