Interview

Could you introduce yourself and your current role?

My name is Lorelei Marfil. I was born and raised in Queens, New York and I moved to London to attend LCF. I'm a general assignment editor at Women's Wear Daily and I'm based in the London office.

Why did you choose to study at LCF?

Moving to London was a pipe dream that came true. I toyed with the idea about freelancing for a European publication and studying abroad one day. LCF's reputable program is what attracted me to apply. I graduated from LCF's MA Fashion Journalism program and won a student award at graduation.

Tell us about your experience of studying at LCF. How did you find the teaching?

My experience was filled with independent work with a focus on the creative practice. The school's facilities offered a lot of resources such as an extensive library (one of my favourite places!) and talks with industry professionals. The program allows you to connect with like-minded individuals on an international level. The program also engages the creative freedom to work on projects and tests you as an individual to see what you are capable of.

Did you find London inspiring as a place to study and live?

Definitely. My original plan was to return to New York after I graduated. But then I fell in love with the city, the culture and the lifestyle and hustled to stay in the country. It also led me to meeting my husband. London has a cool mix of diverse cultures. There are loads of gallery exhibitions and outdoor markets to check out. London has its own unique and creative vibe.

Tell us about an average day at your job?

It's busy and there's never a dull moment. I work with a clever and savvy team led by Samantha Conti. We cover the London market and it includes breaking news to feature stories across various categories such as fashion, business or beauty and our schedules are filled with press appointments, events and parties.

What are the highs and lows of being a journalist?

The highs include the privilege of meeting and interviewing people in the industry and attending various events and launches. The lows would be writer's block.

What’s an ideal weekend for you?

Checking out a new art or photography exhibit or going to the markets. I like going out to eat with my husband and trying new cuisines or
restaurants. And long, lazy meals with friends or picnics in the park.

What have been the biggest challenges, if any, in building your career within the industry?

My background is in print consumer magazines and making a switch to focus on digital was definitely beneficial, informative and worthwhile. Also, moving to a new city while working your way in the industry/a new culture was another adventure.

What are your top tips for people who want to get into roles like yours?

Work hard, don't stop learning, be nice, and have grit.
