Gisela was excited by the idea of pursuing her passion for illustration within the context of the fashion industry. Our BA (Hons) Fashion Imaging and Illustration course enabled her to develop traditional design skills, as well as critical research skills and knowledge of the creative industry. Since graduating from London College of Fashion, Gisela has used this diverse toolkit of skills to build her own brand, run workshops at LCF and more!

Located within LCF’s School of Media and Communication,  BA (Hons) Fashion Illustration and Imaging is an exciting and dynamic course, which combines traditional art techniques with modern technology to create eye-catching visuals, that bring fashion designs to life.

On this course, students are taught skills that will enable them to create hand-drawn illustrations, digital graphics, and photographic images. The course has a truly diverse curriculum, and explores fashion history, marketing, and branding, giving our students a holistic overview of the industry.

Life after graduation can look very different with so many career paths for students to pursue. Past graduates have secured careers in animation, art direction, curation, and freelance fashion illustration - as is the case with alumna, Gisela Gayleard.

Since graduating in 2020, Gisela has used the skills gained from the course to freelance as an illustrator for over a year, where she has been able to hone in on her craft and build her portfolio. During this time, she has also worked with renowned fashion designer Olivia Annabelle.

With a passion for all things creative, Gisela is ready to take the next step by starting her own interior and pattern design brand. With a keen eye for design and a deep understanding of the fashion industry, she has her heart set on making a name for herself as a leading illustrator and creative force in the industry. We recently caught up with Gisela to find out more about her time on the course, her inspirations and all about her brand, Inky Narratives.

After graduating from LCF, you freelanced but also are in the process of developing your own fashion brand. Can you tell us a bit about ‘Inky Narratives’ and what inspired this?

Inky Narratives is a style and a theme of illustration that I have created to make my illustrations original and unique to stand out in the creative industry. After graduating at LCF, I began playing around with different styles and themes for my illustrations, I had changed my style a lot in my final year to make it more commercial and it worked at the time, but it didn’t represent who I was an illustrator at all.

I went back to my traditional ink illustrations that I started illustrating back at the very beginning of art collage and the start of LCF and used some of the digital editing skills I had learned at LCF to develop my traditional style.

I started illustrating themes such as historical events, original narratives and combining patterns, botanicals, and character design into hugely detailed pieces. Over time the style grew, and I started writing short stories, this is where the Inky Narratives began. It was a way for me to illustrate my own stories through enchanting, detailed pictures for people to escape in.

Every month clients would come to me to create an inky narrative for their brand and over the past year, I have created over twenty individual short stories that will soon have their own inky narratives for people to explore.

We hear you’ve recently been back to deliver a workshop to current students! Can you tell us a little more about your involvement with this?

I was always passionate about research and learning in university, sometimes more than creating the actual illustrations, so I have always known that at some point teaching would be something I would like to do.

I was asked back at UAL recently to teach current students about illustration and create workshops for beginner illustrators. I have also had the opportunity to produce a few different projects for LCF since graduating in 2020, which have involved creating an illustration of the Stratford building, which is now being used for the tote bag designs.

As an illustrator, what would a typical day look like for you?

My day is varied depending on what type of project that I am working on, so this could be researching, creating mood boards and the administrative side (which any creative would agree is the worst part of the job!) and then illustrate whichever idea I am working on.

Every day is different, I work at my desk which is my little hub of creativity, the hours sometimes go by and it's already the end of the day, but I enjoy the entire process from idea generation to creating the final piece.

Even when I have worked on very big projects that I have worked on for 8-14 hours a day, I still very much enjoy it as when the outcome is produced it's worth the hours, I put in.

Can you tell us a bit about your professional experience working with brand such as Olivia Annabelle Apparel?

As well as my own personal projects and products that I produce I also do a lot of client-based projects. I have worked closely with fashion designer Olivia Annabelle, producing original illustrative branding for the company, and illustrating packaging as well as prints.

I have also worked within packaging in Europe working on interior product packaging, as well as working closely with magazines on illustrations for covers and double-page spreads.

I am now leaning more towards working on more personal projects to get professionally published and push the Inky Narrative theme into a physical publication.

Finally, why would you recommend applying for the BA (Hons) Fashion Imaging and Illustration course?

Overall, what I enjoyed about the course was that it allows you to meet connections and learn about the sort of clients you might what to work with. It made me feel like illustration is a way to explore new ideas and communicate visually with others.

I also made great friends on the course that I still speak to message old tutors closely today, and still for advice or help on client projects which is useful when you’re at the very beginning of your career. There is a real sense of community on the course, which I loved!
