Meet MSc Strategic Fashion Management student Una Boichun

MSc Strategic Fashion Management is a one-stop course for those aspiring to find their place in the global fashion industry. With an integrated Masters award, optional placement year, and opportunities to gain technological-focused qualifications, this offers a study of what goes on behind the scenes of fashion: business strategy, applied science, and industry operations. It can set you up for a career in the highly competitive fashion industry, but is it the right course for you?

To help in your decision this application season, we sat down with first year MSc Strategic Fashion Management student, Una Boichun, to get an insider’s guidance on the course.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

My real name is Sofia, but my nickname here is Una. It means universal, and I think it's easy to write and pronounce in any language. I’m from Ukraine and finished school and come over to England when I was just 17, which was interesting when all my friends were 18.

I’ve dreamed of working in the fashion industry since I was eight, and knew I wanted to study in London. I chose LCF over CSM when I landed on studying fashion business rather than design. Now, I’m here at LCF to start my own fashion brand. This course is the best instrument I could’ve chosen to help me reach that dream.

Why did you choose MSc Strategic Fashion Management? Was there a reason you chose a longer course that has the option for a placement year and a master’s degree?

Our course features CMI and other certificates, which puts it above the BSc in my book. Besides, this is the most helpful course for someone that wants to start a fashion brand. Without their guidance on laws, taxes, administration and operational advice, I would be lost. I don’t think I’d know how to do any of that myself. It’s orientated on leadership and strategy, which aligns well with my goals. Plus, in my country most people finish higher education with a Masters, so it was a given.

So far, is the course how you expected?

I suppose it’s even better as I expected, as I didn’t expect to have such great staff. They’re positioned in the industry themselves and are always helpful with making connections. I’m very proud and grateful for our lecturers.

Have you noticed any qualities that makes someone well-suited to the course?

People that know what they want would do really well. If they have somewhere they want to work, something they want to achieve, just someone who knows what they want, to strive towards. Then again, if you don’t know what you want this course would be able to support you as we try so many different things. Business management, product management, finance, accounting – you can explore yourself on this course. The most important quality is being committed to the course.

What advice would you give to people thinking of applying to the course?

Be open to everything, and to try everything as much as you can. The course is structured very well, and it gives you a lot of information, it gives a lot of skills, so just be open to what the course gives. Accept it – and enjoy it!

Have you been able to make any links in the fashion industry while studying?

As I said, our lecturers themselves are really well positioned in the industry. But we also have a lot of speakers who are invited to our lectures and seminars, sometimes from different countries. Our lecturers encourage us to explore the fashion industry ourselves, so for example, my friends and I tried to get into lots of different fashion shows, and sometimes we succeeded and made connections there. Also, the students are future connections, don’t forget that.

And finally, where do you want to be professionally five years after graduation?

I really want to create my brand. I suppose the course is built for that, they teach us about leadership, supply chains, fashion management. Whether you want to run your own brand or work at one, the course can give you so much support. So, in five years, I’ll be operating my brand.
