Inci, which actually means pearl in English, is from Turkey and moved to London 11 years ago. She is studying MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise at Central Saint Martins.
Why did you choose to study your course and why CSM?
CSM/UAL’s reputation across different schools in the UK was most attractive to me, and I was right to believe that it would equip me with the right knowledge and tools I needed in my career. The more I was involved with the course committee, as I was a course rep, as well as different events and talks, the more I was able to see the vast variety of opportunities my school was able to offer, which I’ve always increasingly felt proud of. I am so happy that I have been able to find a master’s degree that I think is really greatly placed to explore the needs of today’s society, and that I have been able to study contemporary global discourses during my course.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?
The most interesting project I’ve worked on was definitely the final dissertation. It was a blend of tying every topic we’ve touched upon throughout the two years in the course, and I was able to find an independent body of research through these, which also became a real-life project. The perspectives I’ve gained from my project tutor, course professors, classmates (spread across the world as our course is based online with another cohort in Hong Kong), created the most important part of my experience at CSM.
What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?
Definitely try to be present in the opportunities you will get emails about. Although the course will be based online, the school/committee has been able to develop an interactive curriculum that explores online and in-person activities for pupils, and is constantly looking to increase these.
What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?
Being able to make connections with the pupils in the Hong Kong cohort has been one of the mentionable highlights throughout this course. I was also given vouchers to spend in the Arts Shop because I completed a general survey, and I was really happy to see the products we had available, which I think is a really cool compartment we have onsite.
What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years' time?
I would like to continue to explore career areas and get involved in sectors that are globally aiming to improve worldly wellbeing. As my final project allowed me to explore the sustainability sector more, I would love to be able to find a position in the creative industry and become an advocate for sustainable living through the arts practices.
What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?
What I found to be the most important thing was the available space we had for free expression and discussion between our peers. Being able to brainstorm together gave the feeling of safety within in a caring community.
