I have worked at Saint Martins, since 1995. I started working as a visiting tutor in Part/Time BA at CSM teaching painting in 1995. I also run an ArtsCom short course called ‘Mixed Media Painting’ which started in 1999.
What’s your background?
I studied Fine Art at Chelsea School Of Art and specialised as a painter. I have worked with many different painting materials and finishes, working with Mixed media materials and light sensitive photographic emulsion. I have exhibited in the UK and internationally and sold work to a number of public and private collections, see my website at www.carolinelist.com.
What do you love most about your job?
I am always learning something new and I love the creative inventive environment. The students are always asking challenging questions, which I try my best to answer.
What's your favourite thing about Central Saint Martins?
Great new workshops and facilities and the team I work with are always an inspiration.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
Other artists - there are too many to mention.
Who's your favourite artist/photographer/fashion designer/director?
I have so many favourites, it depends on my mood but to start in fashion: Pam Hog, Mark Jacobs, and BIBA.
Artist contemporary: Sigmar Polka ,Tobias Lehner and the Leipzig school of painters such as Matthias Weischler.
Artist Traditional: Gasper David Friedrich, John Martin Francisco Goya.
Film director: Tarkovsky, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese.
What advice would you give to new students?
Experimentation is the key, explore your ideas through different materials and expand on your skills. ‘ Rome wasn’t built in a day.’
