Interview

Why did you choose to study BA Fashion Communication: Histories and Theories at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

Since my early years, clothing has captivated my keen interest. Although, I initially embarked on studies in Fashion Business, I soon discovered a deeper fascination with the historical facets of fashion. I opted for CSM based on its great reputation and the intriguing profiles of the course team.

What was the most interesting project you worked on during your time on the course?

Certainly, the most captivating project I undertook during my course was delving into my master's research. It involved an in-depth study on the transformation of the вишита сорочка (the ethnic Ukrainian embroidered shirt) into a symbol of Ukrainian nationalism and resistance, spanning from the 19th century to the present day.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

As individuals within this industry, it's crucial to avoid negative attitudes. We hold the power to bring about positive change in this field. I also advocate for exploring cultures beyond the Western perspective and engaging in thorough analysis of all the material you encounter.

What was the highlight of your Central Saint Martin’s experience?

One standout moment during my Central Saint Martin’s experience was the final exhibition at the Lethaby Gallery. It allowed me to present my thesis topic to a diverse audience and showcase the Ukrainian ethnic embroidered shirt to individuals from various cultural backgrounds. Additionally, receiving a nomination for the Mullen Lowe NOVA Awards was a particularly honourable and memorable recognition.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

One of the most crucial lessons I've gained is the importance of consistently questioning what one perceives as a fact. For example, it's essential to investigate the authorship of a text and how it might have shaped the narrative. Similarly, considering the context in which a photograph was taken is vital—could that context have impacted our current perception of a particular era?
