Interview

Why did you choose to study your course and why Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

I was drawn to the course’s focus on communication and identity. Over the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to cultivate a distinct design identity, thanks to the programme's emphasis on personal development. The course encourages us to explore our individual creativity, offering the freedom to research, design, and create whatever we’re passionate about within the framework of our own imagined world. It’s like building a brand from the ground up, where every design, concept, and decision reflects who we are as designers and creators.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?

The most interesting and challenging project I’ve worked on so far is my final collection, which I am currently developing. This collection represents the culmination of every skill I’ve acquired during my time at CSM. I’ve incorporated millinery techniques and textile development from my placements, collaborated with fellow students on a communication campaign inspired by our second-year team project, and explored innovative cutting techniques Il earned during our industry collaboration with Alexander McQueen. It has been satisfying to see my progress visually in a collection, and to have the freedom to be able to design and create anything I want.

Have you completed any work placements / internships whilst being on the course?

I’ve had the privilege of working with renowned designers like Molly Goddard and milliner Noel Stewart, gaining hands-on experience in the British and European fashion scenes. At Molly Goddard, I contributed to various departments, including bridal and production, with roles in cutting, sewing (machine and hand), pattern making, textiles development, sourcing, and studio maintenance. I also assisted in creating the AW24 collection and supported their London Fashion Week show. At Noel Stewart, I worked on design, research, blocking, pattern making, sewing, press, and deliveries, with notable projects like creating hats for the Yves Saint Laurent menswear show, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, and multiple collaborations with Balenciaga, including their AW24 Haute Couture collection. These experiences have deepened my understanding of both streetwear and haute couture, highlighting the importance of quality craftsmanship.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

My advice would be to avoid getting distracted by what other students or industry designers are doing. Instead, focus on what you truly love and enjoy creating. Staying true to yourself and your unique design style is essential—it’s what will make you stand out. Take the time to understand who you are as a designer and explore the areas that truly interest you, whether they are rooted in reality or come from an imagined world. Immerse yourself in your work, and push your ideas as far as they can go!

What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?

The highlight of my time at CSM has undoubtedly been the collaborative aspect of the course. I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many inspirational people and had the opportunity to work with fellow students, both within fashion and across other disciplines. The industry projects we’ve worked on—such as those with Alexander McQueen and Uniqlo—have provided invaluable insights into the industry, challenging us to contextualise our work, communicate meaningful messages through design, and push the boundaries of creativity, ingenuity, and sustainability.

My placement year further expanded my horizons, pushing me out of my comfort zone by working alongside industry professionals with years of experience. This exposure allowed me to experience both the couture and streetwear sectors of the industry, giving me a well-rounded perspective and a deeper understanding of the diverse nature of fashion.

What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years time?

I plan to continue my education with a master’s degree, where I hope to refine my skills and further develop and contextualise my design style. My goal is to create garments that inspire escapism and personal expression, redefining fashion as a powerful tool for storytelling. I want to craft pieces that are both theatrical and wearable, blending creativity with practicality. Ultimately, I aspire to either join a design team at an established brand or launch my own label, where I can bring my visions to life.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?

My time on this course has taught me a great deal about myself—how to understand my boundaries, push my limits, and discover my approach to research and design. I’ve also gained invaluable skills that enable me to create pieces that truly reflect who I am. The opportunity to experience the fashion industry firsthand during my placement year has been instrumental in deepening my understanding of the fashion world and has further solidified my desire to be apart of it in the future.
