Interview

Why did you choose to study your course and why Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

With a background in business (MBA) and technology (BSE), I was looking for an educational opportunity that focused on the visual arts and could support my various communication projects. The premise of MA Communicating Complexity examining communication and design through a lens of complexity is particularly compelling to me.

I initially considered online courses from top universities worldwide and wasn’t specifically targeting CSM. However, I chose MA Communicating Complexity for its unique content and objectives and am thrilled that it is offered by CSM. The combination of CSM’s art and design focus, the diverse people it attracts, and its connections to other UAL research and programmes has been hugely beneficial.

What’s the most interesting part of the curriculum so far?

It’s fascinating to reflect on how complex the world has become since I began my career (in the 1980s!). I also find it intriguing that much of the research we explore has roots in education and management consultancy projects I’ve encountered in the past. Seeing how thinking and practice have evolved over time and considering their relevance in today’s increasingly complex world has been eye-opening in many ways.

How has the low-residency delivery mode supported your studies and career goals?

I travel a few weeks out of every month, so a full-time, on-site course wouldn’t have been feasible for me. I’ve been impressed with the online tools and structured approach, which allow us to plan coursework around other commitments well in advance.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Reach out to current students to learn about our experiences. MA Communicating Complexity is a new course, and our cohort comes from a wide range of backgrounds. In my experience, the course is highly relevant and beneficial to individuals with diverse interests and expertise.

What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?

The two-week residential in London at CSM has been the highlight so far. While online learning offers significant advantages, such as the global diversity of our group and access to extensive resources, practices, and tools - meeting and learning in person at CSM has been incredibly valuable.

What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years' time?

Now closer to the end of my career than the beginning, my goal for the next five years is to continue applying the skills and perspectives I’m gaining through MA Communicating Complexity to contribute to meaningful projects that make a positive impact on the world.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?

Everything is related to everything else – and not neatly.
