Nicky Backlund is a second year BA (Hons) Ceramic Design student at Central Saint Martins.

Interview

Why did you choose to study BA (Hons) Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins?

Having decided to follow my passion for the arts, I fell in love with ceramics during my foundation at WMC (Working Men’s College) and an exciting and challenging career in Global Marketing & Events.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far?

Ooh, that’s a tough one as I have genuinely enjoyed every project! If I had to choose, I’d probably say the one I’m currently working on. I am focusing on the realities of Motherhood, a topic which is getting a lot of attention across the board. It is enabling me to connect with some very interesting people and projects.

What are you currently working on outside of your course?

I’m currently working on some adhoc projects to gain some hands-on experience with Ricky Grimes, a local ceramicist in North London. I am also course rep and a CSM Student Ambassador which generates lots of opportunities for myself to get involved with different events at the College.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

I couldn’t recommend the course enough. With community spirit at it’s heart, it is a fantastic space, with great likeminded people. There are also amazing tutors and technicians, as well as a diverse range of extremely talented project specific guest tutors throughout the different stages. With that in mind, my advice would be to be ready to give your all and make the most out of this course and all it has to offer.

What has been the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

I would say the highlight of my CSM experience to date is the people, being part of a community that I feel like I belong in. Every day I get to surround myself with peers and tutors who constantly inspire me, for a multitude of reasons. The connections you make and the continued encouragement and patience of the tutors are just amazing.

What are your career aspirations?

I 100% want to still be making. In what context? I honestly don’t know, there is so much to yet explore. I would like to stay connected to my peers, supporting each other in what is a very exciting time for all things ceramic but for now I am really enjoying the learning aspect.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

To always consider your practice from an ethical and sustainable perspective. To listen, support and appreciate efforts, big and small. Share knowledge and support others. Have confidence in yourself, and conviction in your work and what you believe in.
