Interview

Why did you choose to study your course and why Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

My interest in Graphic Design actually extended from college. At the time I was pursuing the subject alongside Fine Art and I was really torn between which one I liked most. However, my experience of being on the UAL Insights programme helped me to solidify my decision as I got a taste of what it would be like studying Graphic Design at CSM. The structure of the course and the way it’s taught is what sold me. Soon enough, I began to realise that I didn’t have to make a choice between fine art or design, as the two can be integrated into one to create my own unique practice as a designer.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?

This is a hard question as I would say I have been quite multidisciplinary across projects from speculative design, branding, installations, coding and publications. For my final year I have been exploring themes of culture and community, and seek to express these themes through photography, collaging and publications to hone in on these mediums that I have fallen in love with. Overall, what makes a project interesting to me is if I have a personal connection to it because it makes the work more meaningful. Even when this personal connectivity isn’t present, I always find a way to embed a sense of empathy in my work.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Be open minded, you’ll be surprised how much your work and interests will change when you join the course and engage with different projects and workshops. I would also say to trust the process. There may be points where you might be confused about the direction you are heading or your position as a designer, but everything will start making sense and come together in the end.

What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?

I would say being able to facilitate younger students’ journey into higher education. As a student ambassador, my role has involved helping out with workshops, delivering portfolio presentations and easing any worries or doubts about university life in general. It’s been really fun helping others and also getting a sneak peek into the next generation of artists/designers.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?

To get out of my comfort zone. It’s okay to be uncomfortable, just put yourself out there, talk to new people and most importantly have fun as the years go by quick!
