Interview

Why did you choose to study BA Product and Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

I’ve always had a deep passion for art, and I wanted to channel this into the world of product and industrial design. Central Saint Martins is a leader in the design world, and the campus is truly one of a kind. It’s not just a place to learn; it’s an experience. From on-campus fashion runways to top-of-the-range facilities, and lectures from inspiring special guests, CSM offers an environment where creativity and innovation can thrive and doors can be opened. The Product and Industrial Design course encourages you to think outside the box and gives you the freedom to explore what inspires you.

What have you been working on since graduating?

Since graduating, I’ve launched my own businesses, including a brand called Fun Soaps. Aimed at shaking up the soap industry with natural novelty soaps for children, making bath time fun! To date, I’ve sold over 1000 soaps online, and my businesses have scaled beyond what I once thought possible. I remember dreaming up these ideas in the studios at CSM.

I also work in the eCommerce space, applying the human-centred design principles I learnt at CSM to how products resonate with customers. I’ve had the opportunity to work with and scale-up brands. I have even become an exclusive product reviewer for a global marketplace, where I provide feedback to help improve products and influence purchasing decisions from hundreds of popular and upcoming brands.

My journey is still unfolding, and I’m learning more every day. My dream is to create something that will change the world, one interaction at a time. Every project I take on is a step toward that goal, and I’m excited to continue growing and discovering new ways to make a meaningful impact.

What was the most interesting project you worked on during your time on the course?

One project that stands out is my final year collaboration with the ‘Discovery’ brand to design CRATOR, a customisable sand time-keeping device for children aged 8-12. Kids create personalised schedules for activities like homework and screen time through an app. The app sends data to the device, which uses a magnet to draw the corresponding visual patterns in the sand. As the patterns change, children engage with time management in a fun, sensory way, watching their creations come to life and reinforcing healthy habits. I loved combining creativity with technology on this project. Designing the robotic system was challenging but rewarding, and with regular guidance from technicians throughout the process, I was able to develop a working prototype for the grad show. The feedback from industry leaders at different touch points were invaluable in shaping the final product.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Embrace the entire journey. No one expects you to have all the answers at the start. Take full advantage of the facilities, the incredible tutors, and the unique opportunities to explore new ideas. Don’t take criticism personally, your tutors want to see you succeed and will help guide you to find and develop your strengths. There will be many exciting projects along the way, so make the most of it, get to know your peers, and explore the CAD, electronics, and workshop facilities. I wish I had spent even more time experimenting early on, as it was one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey at CSM.

What was the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

The highlight was seeing my final year work on display at the grad show. Showcasing my designs to thousands of industry professionals and visitors was an incredible experience; watching them interact with my projects, ask questions, and engage with my ideas was both rewarding and fulfilling. It was a proud moment and a great opportunity to network and build valuable industry connections.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

I learnt that if you can envision something and have the patience and courage to bring it to life, anything is possible. Whether it’s a big idea or something small, everything has a place and purpose in the world.
