Biography

I have been working in the field of feature animation since 1986. A 1997 graduate of Kingston University (graphic design and illustration), I initially specialised in illustration for children's books, theatrical costume design and packaging illustration, working in London, Brussels and New York.

My career in animation began when I joined the London studio of legendary animation director Richard Williams from 1982 - which ultimately led to a position as head of backgrounds on the Walt Disney feature film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988).

In 1989 I was hired by Steven Spielberg as one of the original team of artists at the Amblimation Studio in London where I worked on animation feature films until recruited in early 1995 as one of the first team of artists to join Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen's new studio, DreamWorks. Since joining DreamWorks Animation as co-head of Artist Development, I have worked in many areas of feature animation production at the studio and was closely involved in setting up new DWA studio locations in Bangalore and Shanghai. After 22 years with the studio I left Dreamworks Animation in late 2016 to take up new career opportunities as an independent talent consultant, working with leading animation studios worldwide – including Aardman (UK).

My 36+ feature film credits include: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Prince Of Egypt, Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and, most recently, Ron's Gone Wrong (Disney 2021).

In December 2019 I joined Locksmith Animation (UK) and is now based in central London. My primary areas of expertise are in feature animation, talent resourcing, management, and outreach to schools and other artistic centres of excellence.

As someone who began my career as a production artist, I have a unique insight into developing and sustaining a long term career in animation at the highest levels. In addition to my full-time role in feature animation production, I also regularly teach classes at many leading animation schools worldwide in capacities as Visiting Professor and External Examiner. I am also a frequent speaker and presenter at animation festivals and conferences worldwide.

I am a regular member of the awards juries of international animation festivals including: Annecy (France), Trickfilmfestival (Stuttgart), Encounters (UK), Anilogue (Hungary), Siggraph (USA and Asia), GAFX and 24FPS (India) and CICAF (China). I am a Program Board member of the FMX conference (Stuttgart). I have  a particular interest in student animation and hosts student-focused events at many major international animation festivals.
