Sojin is from Korea, now based in the UK, and is studying MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise at Central Saint Martins.
Why did you choose to study MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise and why CSM?
The heart of my decision was the unique blend of cultural and entrepreneurial studies that this course offers. I was seeking a way to to harmonize commercial acumen and entrepreneurial potential with my artistic ambitions. The two-year duration of the programme has also been invaluable, providing me the flexibility to nurture new ideas and launch ventures while continuing to balance event management, content and art creation, and even novel writing alongside my studies.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?
I've been working on an event called 'Feel the Book!' happening at King’s Cross this October. This experimental initiative celebrates book culture through exhibition and workshops, redefining the act of reading as a dynamic and multi-sensory experience through artistic practices. Directing this project will be both an academic and professional milestone. 'Feel the Book!' is exploring the role of art in connecting and revitalising communities for social sustainability via participatory art events, with a focus on diversity and inclusion, which experiments with the possibilities of what I learnt from Unit 3 on the course, which focuses on the values of arts for sustainable global communities.
What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?
UAL has an extraordinary network and supportive staff. My own journey organising 'Feel the Book!' had massive support from CSM staff and UAL students behind it. It's important to be brave and ask for help, share thoughts, and make efforts to take advantage of the resources the community offers. The courage to seek support often opens more doors than anyone expects.
What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?
Aside from the supportive staff, there are brilliantly passionate peers. MA ACE brings together a group of aspiring leaders, each with an independent and pioneering spirit, and a wealth of diverse backgrounds and disciplines, which has made CSM a place of constant learning and inspiration. Beyond the classroom, we’ve shared a private Tate tour, ventured together to the outskirts of London, and are even planning a trip to Greece to celebrate one of our peers’ gallery opening. I truly hope this network continues to thrive and I can give as much to this community as I have received.
What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years time?
I wish to never stop creating. In five years, I hope to make my mark across the art world with my borderless identities—whether through photography, design, writing, or other forms—and bring my business ideas to life. Above all, I want to remain undefined, continuously evolving without limits and engaging with diverse industries.
What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?
MA ACE has kept encouraging me to think of the possibilities of art and culture in the world, which has broadened my interests and motivated me to explore different perspectives and experiment with new approaches. We are about to begin a unit focused on entrepreneurship, so I look forward to gaining practical knowledge that will help me develop and execute my own business ideas, as well as to engage with other inspirational industry insights.
