Interview

Why did you choose to study MA Narrative Environments at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

My undergraduate was is in spatial design, and having delved into the theoretical and practical framework of spatial design to a certain extent, I think I lack a clearer logic of design thinking. I am very fond of narrative systems for MA Narrative Environments and I have tried to use narrative in my portfolio during my undergraduate studies. I see the practice of spatial design as a 'hard power' for me and the narrative and speculative theory of narrative environments as a 'soft power' for me to enhance my career, so this learning journey will be a 'soft power' for everyone who needs it. This learning journey will be a necessity for everyone who needs 'soft power'. At Central Saint Martins, I have access to the most avant-garde and trendy art and design in the world, so I chose to come here for a more in-depth study and experience.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?

We worked on a project with Estee Lauder. During this project, I was in a group with 2 of my peers, together we designed a pop-up beauty shop based on the concept of salt, using Dubai as the design location. I think it was a very narrative and speculative design project.

Have you completed any work placements / internships whilst being on the course? If so, can you tell me a little bit about your role?

I currently have an internship working as an assistant to the talented designers at FREE STATE, which is a perfect opportunity for me to learn about design.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Read more books and newspapers, keep your hobbies going and get more sleep! The knowledge of books is an important role in supporting your theoretical foundation, as well as real time events playing an important role in your speculative thinking for the future. Hobbies are also a great opportunity to be able to integrate with your future projects. Rest is an important thing for every designer and artist!

What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?

Countless exhibitions, lectures and interesting people!

What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years' time?

I want to further refine my translation design system through narrative systems and speculative.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?

Very logical speculative design thinking and narrative systems in practice!
