Yichu Li is from China and is studying MA Performance: Screen at Central Saint Martins.
Why did you choose to study your course and why CSM?
I have been fascinated by art and fashion for as long as I can remember, having studied painting from an early age. I have always aspired to build bridges between different cultures and create artworks that reflect contemporary contexts. Choosing MA Performance: Screen at CSM was a natural step for me. CSM offers a unique platform to explore the role of filmmakers and artists in the 21st century, a time when screens dominate our lives and capture people's attention like never before.
The course provides an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the intersection of performance, screen-based media, and contemporary art. It allows me to investigate what it means to be a creative professional in today's digital age, where the boundaries between different media are increasingly blurred.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?
One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on so far is my current REBEL project. This project involves developing an album that features Techno, Electronic, and Tribal House music and creating music videos based on the beats and tunes rather than traditional, word-based scripts.
My experience as a director, photographer, and DJ has uniquely positioned me to tackle this project, allowing me to combine my diverse skill sets into a cohesive and innovative artistic endeavour. The process of translating music into visual narratives is both challenging and exhilarating, as it requires a deep understanding of how sound frequencies can evoke specific imagery and emotions.
Have you completed any work placements / internships whilst being on the course?
During my time at CSM, I have actively pursued various roles as a commissioned photographer, director, and DJ. This multifaceted approach has allowed me to immerse myself in different scenarios within the creative industries, enriching my understanding of how these fields operate and build up networks.
In addition to my hands-on experience, I have also sought mentorship from industry experts in photography and filmmaking, whose insights and guidance have been incredibly beneficial.
What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?
My advice to students considering this course is to maintain an open mind and be deeply attuned to the world around you. It’s essential to absorb knowledge not only from films and art but from a wide array of disciplines and life experiences. We are creating content for people, so having a profound understanding of humanity is crucial.
Cultivating strong communication and collaboration skills is equally important. Engaging with diverse perspectives and learning to work effectively within a team will enhance your creative process and result in more impactful work. Embrace every opportunity to interact with different cultures, ideas, and communities, as this will enrich your artistic practice and broaden your creative horizons.
What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?
My time at CSM has been incredibly rewarding, filled with opportunities to collaborate with talented peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, which has helped me unlock new passions and perspectives.
One of the most significant highlights was successfully developing my films in the darkroom. This process required me to challenge myself, embrace the darkness, and apply patience and meticulous attention to detail. It was a profoundly enriching experience that deepened my appreciation for the craft and taught me the value of perseverance.
Additionally, I have thoroughly enjoyed embracing pioneering technologies such as Unreal Engine and 3D photogrammetry. These tools have opened up new creative possibilities, allowing me to blend traditional techniques with cutting-edge innovations.
This fusion of old and new has not only expanded my technical skills but also broadened my artistic vision, reinforcing the importance of staying curious and adaptable in a constantly evolving field.
What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years' time?
In five years, I aspire to focus my work on the female gaze, drawing from my perspective as an Asian female living in London. I am committed to empowering women and the LGBTQ+ community through my art.
I see myself as an accomplished filmmaker and artist, continually curious about the world and eager to explore new ideas. My goal is to create impactful content that challenges societal norms and amplifies underrepresented voices, driving meaningful conversations and fostering a more inclusive creative industry.
What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?
