Black Heroes

Four posters featuring black heroes

Celebrating inspiring black role models through a series of posters created with inmates at HMP Isis

Who do you admire? Who are your heroes? Who might inspire you to change? These are the questions we posed inmates at HMP Isis in July 2022. Role models from the worlds of music, sport, and design, as well as the likes of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, came up time and time again.

These answers were brought to life in a series of poster designs created by DAC Research Lab in collaboration with the design agency Here. The posters were displayed in the Granary Building at Central Saint Martins from October-November 2022 for Black History Month, and across the HMP Isis prison estate.

Of the over 700 18-24 year old inmates residing at HMP Isis, 70% are from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. Although the posters were created for Black History Month, the aim was to provide on-going inspiration, all year round.

Each poster features a a rallying call and inspiring ideas from the individual pictured in the design, including Barack Obama, Stromzy, Virgil Abloh, Marcus Rashford, Nipsey Hussle, Lebron James, Usain Bolt and more.
