Launched in 2021 and now in its fifth year, Hybrid Innovation (HI) is an ambitious training programme for industry partners and third sector taught by academics from both ST and CSM.
Through a distinct blend of ideas, approaches and methods drawn from creative practices, techno-scientific thinking and the critical posthumanities, HI engages participants in reframing innovation as a lifelong learning process.
It furnishes them with the ‘elbow room’ needed to be resilient, curious and comfortable with uncertainty. A programme of talks and practical workshops span future-crafting, bioart, translation studies, material innovation, sustainable ceramics, philosophical speculation, world-building, critical making and science-led discussion - plus a study visit to CSM.
HI is inspired by the idea of lifelong learning as a way of cultivating the innovator’s mindset. Through thematic activities, talks and workshops, participants learn to ‘think like'… a designer /a scientist / a philosopher /a translator /an engineer ... With this practise, HI fosters a culture for transforming ideas, reframing problems and re-imagining frameworks.
Participants gain transcultural insights for planning and executing strategies to create unique innovation within their companies.
During January, a group of industry professionals taking part in the Hybrid Innovation programme visit CSM for talks and networking. The visit includes student and staff presentations, workshops in the Grow Lab and a tour of the campus guided by CSM Head of International Partnerships, Dr Jo Wheeler. This annual knowledge exchange is an opportunity for sharing ideas and building connections.
