Central Saint Martins is delighted to announce the appointment of Hywel Davies as Dean of M School after a competitive international recruitment process.

Hywel has been acting Dean of M School since May 2024, and has led Fashion at CSM in the role of Programme Director since 2017. Hywel completed BA Fashion Communication and Promotion at Central Saint Martins and worked as a fashion journalist before moving into a variety of roles across the Fashion programme, enabling a key understanding of the College from different perspectives.

Hywel will work alongside the other Deans to develop Schools at CSM, and lead Fashion and Jewellery, Textiles and Materials programmes in their journey to articulate their ambition and purpose for M school.

Hywel will take up the permanent post of Dean of M School from 10 June 2024.

Central Saint Martins is part of my DNA. I graduated from BA Fashion Communication in 1998 and worked for 10 years as a fashion journalist before coming back to Central Saint Martins as an Associate Lecturer, moving across into different roles to become Programme Director for Fashion, which I’ve led for the past seven years. I feel super excited with my role as Dean and the opportunities schools provide us as a community – I want to ensure we have an inclusive, transparent and dynamic school that supports everyone.

— Hywel Davies, Dean of M School, Central Saint Martins
Hywel is a key member of the Central Saint Martins community and I am delighted that we have his experience and expertise. Under his leadership as Programme Director, Hywel and the team have grown Fashion from strength to strength, showcasing what it means to study Fashion in an art & design context. Hywel impressed the appointment panel with his student- and staff-centred approach, his strengths in knowledge exchange and connecting what we do to an external audience, and his thinking about how to enable a meaningful vision in collaboration. His leadership approach and expertise will be a great asset to our college as we move to Schools of Thought, and in delivering the ambitions of the UAL strategy.
