Heterotopias

Reimagining the Institution through the lens of its collection

Architecture and Spatial Design students from our Foundation Diploma, present their visions for an offsite public engagement space for the Museum & Study Collection.

Heterotopia is a concept devised by Michel Foucault that invites investigation of the politics of space; it perhaps offers the closest encounter of real-world Utopia. These spatial proposals invite critical engagement with this collection of work from the College alumni. Students on the first step of their journey at Central Saint Martins instigate a reimagining and questioning of the institution through the lens of its collection.

The Museum team facilitated object analysis sessions to support student led research with debate surrounding the climate emergency, health and care, identity and social justice. This is part of the strategy to decolonise the curriculum and understand institutional critique; activating students to realise the traction theoretical research can hold in speculative world building.

This Window exhibition displays models and images by Architecture and Spatial Design Foundation students alongside selected works by the College alumni.
