Biography

Krasimira Butseva is Senior Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Photography course at London College of Communication. She is a visual artist, researcher and a writer. In her practice, Krasimira engages with ideas around trauma, exploring the dynamics of remembering & forgetting, carrying & caring for memory in the context of Eastern Europe. She creates moving image, photographic and sound works, multimedia installations, in an attempt to visualise traumautic experiences, memory of spaces/landscapes, unofficial archives & silent/silenced narratives.

In 2017, Krasimira Butseva completed an MA in Photography and in 2016 she graduated from BA (Hons) Photography degree at the University of Portsmouth. In 2022 she completed a short course in Activist Cinema at the University College London.

In 2024, Krasimira, alongside her collaborators Dr Lillia Topouzova and Julian Chehirian, were selected to represent the Bulgarian Pavilion at the 60th Venice Art Biennale with their installation The Neighbours. In 2022, she received the BAZA Award for Contemporary Art (YVAA), and in 2021 she was awarded an artist fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany. Krasimira is also one of the co-founders of Revolv Collective, a former editor and contributor to eep berlin, and curator of History in Between digital archive and programme.

Her works are both part of gallery spaces and academic journals. Her article Vernacular memorial museums: memory, trauma and healing in post-communist Bulgaria was published in the 2022, in the journal of Museums & Social Issues. Her work has been exhibited prior at the National Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria (2023), University of Toronto, Canada (2023),  KO-OP Art Space, Sofia, Bulgaria (2023), Voloshyn Gallery, Kiev, Ukraine (2023), ARTGET Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia (2023), Structura Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria (2023), Sofia City Art Gallery, Bulgaria (2022), Sofia History Museum, Bulgaria (2020); Seen Fifteen Gallery, London, UK (2020); District Six Museum, Cape Town, South Africa (2019); EEP Gallery, Berlin, Germany (2019), Phoenix Art Space, Brighton, UK (2018); Four Corners Gallery, London, UK (2017) and Pingyao International Photography Festival, Pingyao, China (2016).
