Nike reached out to University of the Arts London (UAL) to collaborate with its diverse and talented students to create a range of t-shirts for their London 2012 Summer Olympics campaign – Journey to Greatness.
Alumni from 4 UAL colleges of UAL were handpicked and mentored by contemporary British artist, Dave White. Professor Lawrence Zeegen, former Dean of the Design School at London College of Communication (LCC), led the team at LCC. Over the course of 5 weeks, the team met with international Nike athletes including Harry Aikines-Aryeteey, Allyson Felix, Dai Greene and Paula Radcliffe. The themes of determination, persistence and repetitiveness stemmed from the interaction with the athletes and formed the base for their designs. The team also ran a 5K with Paula Radcliffe. One of them ran from Niketown at Oxford Circus to LCC and they used a turntable to draw the final design based on the runner’s heartrate, speed, time and location.
The t-shirt designed by UAL students was sold in 7 Nike stores across London during 2012 Summer Olympics.
